Infantryman, Listed Missing, Declared Dead
Death of Pfc. Donald Fleetwood of Norman, Made Official-Had Been in Africa, Italy
Private First Class Donald Fleetwood, a native of Jackson county, who was reported missing in action in Italy since October 14, 1944, has now been listed by the War Department as killed in action on the same date, according to a telegram received by relatives in Bloomington.
An infantryman, Pfc. Fleetwood was overseas a year prior to his death and had served in North Africa before going into Italy.
The last word received from him was a Christmas greeting which his sister, Mrs. James Greathouse, of Columbus, received from Italy the last week of October, 1944. A few days later word was received that he was missing in action.
Building Destroyed.
Information gained later through other member of his unit revealed that Pfc. Fleetwood and a group of other soldiers were in a building at nightfall after U.S. troops had been forced to fall back. the next morning it was found that the building was destroyed and that there was no trace of the men.
Pfc. Fleetwood, who was living with a brother, Leston Fleetwood, near Norman, at the time of his induction into the armed forces. He was born November 2, 1924, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Fleetwood, of the Norman vicinity. He graduated from Clearspring High School and entered the Army in May, 1942.
Surviving are four brothers; Leston Fleetwood, of Norman, with whom he was making his home; Glenn Fleetwood, of Anderson, former Marine who was wounded on Guam; T/Sgt. Ralph Fleetwood of Camp Roberts, California; Bryon Fleetwood, of Anderswon, veteran of World War I, and four sisters; Mrs. Greathouse of Columbus; Mrs. Rose Deckard and Mrs. Marie Hendricks, both of Bloomington and Mrs. Hubert Cook of Anderson.

MISSING IN ITALY
Pfc. Donald Fleetwood, age nineteen, who was living in Jackson county when he entered the service in May, 1942, has been listed as missing in action in Italy since October 14, according to word received by his sister, Mrs. James Greathouse, of Columbus. She had received a Christmas greeting, which was not dated, from him in Italy last week.
An infantryman, Pfc. Fleetwood has been overseas a year, being stationed in North Africa before going into Italy. He was twenty years of age Thursday.
Pfc. Fleetwood was residing with a brother, Leston Fleetwood, in Jackson county when he entered the service. He had attended the Clearspring High School. A brother, Pfc. Glenn Fleetwood, serving with the Marines, was wounded on Guam and is now in a naval hospital at San Diego, California.
