We are descends of the Wheeler family from Jackson Co and very interested in connecting with anyone this late (c 1900) researching the Wheeler family. We are in Florida for the winter; our files in VA. Have printed copy and will research when we return.
We descend John Carr m Phoebe Wheeler m abt 1854 (record not located) Both born and lived Jackson Co. Phoebe descend of Elnathan Wheeler. John and Saundra CarrQuoting Roots56 (roots56@comcast.net):
* On 25 August 1880 in Jackson Co., IN, a Mary HOUSE(sic) married John WHEELERMarr: 5 Mar 1842
* per Jackson Co., IN Marriage Book H, Page 315. In the 1900 Carr Twp.,
* Jackson Co., IN census, Mary WHEELER (widow) is living in her son's, Silas
* HARRIS, dwelling. I believe that the reference to "HOUSE" as Mary's surname
* in the marriage record was incorrect and that it was actually "HARRIS".
* * Mary WHEELER died 23 July 1901 in Carr Twp., Jackson Co., IN per Jackson Co.,
* IN Death Book 20, Page 12. There is a gravestone in the Lanning Spur
* Cemetery in Carr Twp., for Mary E. HARRIS with a death date of 23 July 1901
* the same date as that of Mary WHEELER.
* * Is Mary (HOUSE) WHEELER actually Mary E. HARRIS? If so, what happend to
* John Wheeler as I've not found any death or burial record for him in Jackson
* Co.?
* * Happy Holidays.

(SOURCE: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/Default.asp?) (6/02)RESIDENCE: Born in Vermont; migrated to OH; then on to Rockford, Jackson Co, IN; a little town that was known as main trading center between Brownstown and Jonesville and all ports north due to its location on the river. It became terminal for flat-boat transportation of crops. Wheeler arrived here (*registered stockmark 30 Jan 1825; purchased 80 acres nr. *STOCK MARKS, Jackson Co, 1817-1838, contributed by Bernice Sallee Martin: "In early days there were few fences, and hogs roamed at will through the woods to fatten on beech mast and acorns. it was therefore necessary to have some system of marking as proof of ownership. To avoid duplication and to protect themselved in case a question arose concerning ownership, the settlers registered their marks with the County Recorder. Even in Territorial days, hog raising was important enough that laws were made providing punishment for the thefe of hogs, alteration of marks, and failure to report strays." This from Book #1 Record of Marks lista James Wheeler 30 Jan 1825.--REF: copy in binder, fische #6049732--FHC by Laura Laza, 4/98 .
RESIDENCE and OCCUPATION: James and Juliatha resided in IN for 20 years, where his occupation from Feb 1834 was owner of a general merchandise store which he expanded the next year, and served as postmaster from 1835; by 1840 he had established a saloon; in 1847-48 he and nine others formed the "Madison & Brownstown Turnpike Company." Then migrated in Mar-Oct 1852 to CA and with son Stephen Clark and thirteen others, to estab. the Wheeler Gold Mine (on the family ranch property) near Puckertown (now Plymouth). RESIDENCE and OCCUPATION: "In 1833, James WHEELER, now in CA [after 1854], kept a grocery store (in Rockford). The store that Wheeler kept would now be called a saloon. Rockford was a point from whence the natives used to embark in flat-boats with port and corn for the distant South. . . . Rockford dwindled down to a few whiskey shops and an occasional harbor for counterfeiters and gamblers. . . in the winter of 1864. This was in the new town, for the old town on the river bank had gone down long before, and the port houses had been removed to the new town. The river has encroached upon the old town location, so that the old site of Kester's pork house and the old grocery stands are now washed away, and what the river failed to obliterate incendiary fires have effected. At this time but two old huts remain of what was once the famous old town of Rockford."--ref: History of Jackson County, IN, Chicago: Brant & Fuller, 1886. !LAND: Copies of several land deed; map shows location of lots purchased in Rockford IN, others--grantee, grantor copied and in binder. 1/96 SLC.

Extracted from Amador County History published by the Amador County Federation of Women's Clubs, April 1927: Amador City--Amador City is situated on the Mother Lode, where it is intersected by Amador Creek, seven miles north of Jackson. It was mined soon after the discovery of gold. Some men from Oregon built two cabins and mined all winter. This was in '48.
James Wheeler, and a party of four, built a double cabin in the fall of '49, on the spot where the Spring Hill mill was afterwards built. Some men from Virginia alo built a cabin and kept a stock of goods as a side line. Old timers mention W. H. Mitchell, William Lesaw, J. A. Tucker, Joseph Wright, Silas Reed, Rev. Ashley, and a man named Wilson, as men who mined here in '49, as well as at Amador Crossing, where the first gold was found. This wa near the Groton ranch.
EARLY SETTLER: Listed along with son Stephen C. as one of the first real settlers in the valley, resided in the Pine Grove area of Shenandoah Valley, Amador, CA. (had 40 acres in 1849 then returned to IN in preparation to move family.) Listed as a merchant and miner.
RESIDENCE: Born in Vermont; migrated to OH; then on to Rockford, Jackson Co, IN; a little town that was known as main trading center between Brownstown and Jonesville and all ports north due to its location on the river. TIDBIT: 1867-69--Wheeler Diggings, a mining camp on Sutter Creek, North Fork, furnished employment for years to a number of men. --ref p 216 Hist of Amador Co, Mason. James Wheeler brought a 7' long 16" wide long tom for his placer mine digs from Sacramento--an improvement over the rocker but was rideculed by conservative miners at first. Then it was used for a year until displaced by a string of sluices to earn out of poorer dirt. Then quartz mining gained majority of interest. --page 218 ibid. I 1903 the old Wheeler mine was being called the Ivanhoe. WHEELER in 17 Apr. 1856, had interest in a grist mill located on north side of Indian Creek in Fiddletown (Plymouth) area on edge of tract known as Wheeler's ranch, 160 acres. Son Stephen C. purchased land adjacent to that of the tract known as Wheeler's ranch, 19 Jan 1859. REF The Shenandoah Valley Area of Amador Co., 1854-1904, p 6. REF: From, RUDDICK Family in America, John W. Hanneman; For James, it mentions that he was ³born 15 July 1803 in Westhaven, VT, that he registered his stockmark at the Jackson co, IN courthouse 30 Jan 1825, that on Dec 20 of that year he purchased 80 a near Rockford, IN; he married Drucilla Brown (born 9 May 1802 in KY), dau of Jacob Brown one of the first settlers in Hamilton township.
Drucilla died 13 Dec 1830; James married Juliatha Cox 4 Sept 1831 and was disowned (which I take to mean she was dismissed because she married a Non-Quaker from the way it is worded here).
18 Feb 1834 James purchased lot in Rockford and opened a general merchandise store.

DEATH: She died the same day as her son was born. Santa Cruz Sentinel March 4, 1882: * Birth-- Wheeler- In San Francisco, February 28, to the wife of William H. Wheeler, a son. same paper, same date: *Death Wheeler- In San Francisco, February 28, after a short illness, Nellie, wife of William H. Wheeler. Santa Cruz Sentinel March 11, 1882 *Death article: Mrs. Wheeler went to San Francisco February 27th. She enjoyed the ride to the city very well, but began to suffer great pain during the ride in the street cars. After lying down and resting, she felt better and went over to the house, expressing herself well pleased with it. She again lay down, and soon vomited. A messenger was sent for Dr. Goss. Before she arrived, Mrs Wheeler went into convulsions. Dr. Goss arrived and remained all night, the convulsions continuing at intervals. Dr. Goss sent for Dr. Cannay, formerly of Santa Cruz. He arrived just as a son was born to Mrs.Wheeler. A twin brother was still born: then the cause of the convulsions was apparent. The latter foetus (sic) had been dead about a week, and mortification had already begun. After the birth of her baby Mrs. Wheeler never spoke. Wednesday she breathed her last.The physicians express the belief that her death was not hastened by her journey.-Watsonville Transcript (her husband's newspaper).
