At age 85, Mr. Phegley was still farming. According to a newspaper clipping, he still used a walking, braking plow on his 15-acre trucking plot. In addition, he never needed eyeglasses.

On December 9, 1945, Mr. Phegley was present at his daughter Laura's home to celebrate his 90th birthday. According to a newspaper clipping:

"In observance of his ninetieth birthday anniversary, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great, great grandchild of George Phegley gathered Sunday noon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Oathout, south of Surprise, for a basket dinner featured by a huge birthday cake bearing ninety candles.

The cake was baked by Mrs. Richard Isaacs, a granddaughter, and was beautifully decorated.

Mr. Phegley, who enjoys excellent health, has been a farmer in Jackson County all of his life, and still is engaged in active farming. He makes his home with Mrs. Oathout, who is his granddaughter (sic) and Mr. Oathout. Mrs. Phegley passed away years ago."

He died in his daughter, Laura's home after a short illness. Funeral services were held at the Surprise church with the Rev, George Beckman in charge. He was buried in the River view Cemetery.

Notes for ROY TOVEY:

My great great grandfather, George R. Tovey, was born in England in 1832. He came to Canada at the age of fifteen (1847), a stowaway on a ship. He lived with the Indians for four years, (1847- 1851). The Chief wanted him to marry his Princess. "GR" did not want to, so he ran away again and came down into southern Ohio in 1851.

Sarah Ann Pierce was born in Delaware in 1839 and came into Ohio. George and Sarah were married in 1857. Their children born in Ohio were: William J (1858-1933), Anna Elizabeth (1860-1924), Calab (1862-1955), and Susan (1864-1940). Great great grandfather George and family came to southern Indiana in 1867. Their children born in Indiana were: twins George Little (1869-1947) and George Littler (1869-infancy), George Thomas (stillborn), and Josie (?-1889). William J., the oldest, was born in 1858. He married Cemanth Henry in 1882. They were parents to seven children: George (1882-1946), Lawrence (1884-1941), Roxie (1886-1976), Earl (1890-1893), Lorey (1896-1976), and twins, Homer (1899-1979) and Omer (1899-1980).

Lawrence, my father, graduated from grade school, took the state teacher's exam, and began teaching in 1900. When school was out for summer break, he worked for his sister, Roxie, and her husband (Walter Harms) who operated the Long Dairy located northwest of Hoopeston.

My father met my mother, Iva Smith, born in 1889, who lived southeast of Hoopeston. They were married in 1917. I was born in 1919. Dad quit teaching after he married mother, and farmed southeast of Hoopeston until he was killed after being struck by a car in Danville, IL in 1941. My mother, Iva, died in 1967. I farmed for 50 years and retired. I married Joan Schwartz in 1944. One son, Roy Jr. (Rick) was born in 1945. Joan died in 1986 and is buried at the mausoleum in Sunset Memorial Park, Danville. I am a trustee, chairman, and deacon at the First Christian Church, and a director of Grant Township for Vermilion County Farm Bureau.

Roy Jr. married Jan Barger from Bensenville in 1968. Rick and Jan have two sons, Mark (born 1973) and Kevin Douglas (born 1975). Mark married Lisa Milton. Kevin married Tanya Marie Glenn on 11/15/1997, and they have one son, Zachary (born 4/3/1999).
