Descendants of Blaze Robertson

Generation No. 1

1. BLAZE(B1731)2 ROBERTSON (UNK INENGLAND1)1 was born 1731 in Northumberland Co. England1, and died 18101. He married HANNAH HUTCHINSON11. She was born 15 Jul 1751 in Loudon Co, VA, per Farrell Lenz1, and died 17 Jun 1836 in Hamilton Twp1.

Notes for BLAZE(B1731) ROBERTSON:

Per beginning of DINN book, pg 9, the first Blaze Robinson who came to America was The eldest son of a Robertson in Northumberland Co., England. He was supposed to inherit from this father the family estate, but his fathers brother had designs on the property and so he shipped the young Blaze, 12-15 years of age, on a boat to Virginia, where he was bound out to a planter in Va until he was 21.

more details on pg 18 , paraphrased by khardersittel:

a native of London , England, but some say Linden England, a small town here the Scottish border in Northumberland Co. He lived in London, and started to America ca 1750. It is believed his father was John, who had a brother named Blaze. Uncle Blaze was a wealthy merchant and had extra regard for young Blaze since he was his namesake. He was supposedly an apprentice and heir of older Blaze, but some say he was stolen from his father by his uncle. Either way, the two started to America. On the way, the older Blaze was either killed, or became ill and died. He was not permitted to see his Uncle. Some people say the ship was supposed to go to Boston, but ended up in VA. To pay for his passage, young Blaze was bound out to General Stevens - a VA officer in during the Revolution. He ended up being a recruiting officer while supervising Steven's plantation in Berkeley CO, VA. He worked off his debt quickly and soon became overseer of the plantation. Blaze kept a diary of sorts. Jim Roberts has in (in 1975) Blaze tried to get his Uncles wealth but was never able to do so. For his services, in 1798, VA gave him 114 acres in Hardy CO. This was valuable Lost River . Supposedly he died there Sep 19, 1810. His date of death varies, but this one makes most sense .2 years before he died 4 of his grown children and he moved to IN. The Lost River estate was sold to George Miller, with administration left to lawyer Jonathon Bronson and later, Father-in-law Jerimiah Inskeep. The Robertsons supposedly only received $20 from the sale.

from pg 25 of DINN book:

The Robertsons originally came from Scotland when they first appeared as a clan in 1391. Per Robertson H. Short, July 1945, upon his last visit to his grandfather, James Robertson in Dec 1903. He was 15, and James was 84.

paraphrased, and I didn't include previously typed info - , khardersittel2006

Blaze Robinson was James Robisnsons grandfather. Blaze sailed to this country when he was 14, along with his bachelor uncle, also named Blaze. The older Blaze wanted his nephew to become familiar with his holdings in America before returning to London to finish his schooling. On the way over the young Blaze was told one morning that his Uncle died during the night, and had to be buried at sea. He was not given access to his uncle's papers. He was given his cape and a book. (this book is still in the family) He was told by the crew that they would have to bind him out for 7 years to pay for his passage. He was not allowed to communicate with his family in London. When he was free, at 21, he worte to them. He got one letter back saying they were sending money to get him passage back to London. But he never heard from them again, and received no monies either. This was probably due to the American Revolution. Since this was before the age of bank checks, money was sent over by other migrants, who may have kept the money, or failed to locate him, or died at sea, as many did.

"Blaze was undoubtedly in VA, but I do not recall how he got there, as he had sailed for Boston..." George Roberts, son of Rose Robertson Roberts, added this "After Blaze's uncle died at sea, the crew mutinied, made the Captain walk the plank, and took over the ship. They changed the course to VA, where they sold the cargo, and bound Blaze out. Blaze was overseer for General Stevens, and his duties kept him out of the Revolution. " The British burned the records in Hardy and Berkley counties, making research difficult. Being bound out was not uncommon, nor to be an apprentice, to pay for passage.

Per Andrew Robinson section of DINN book, after Blaze (1731) died, the following kids moved to IN with their mother Hannah: John, William, Rebecca, George and Andrew. Families intermarried - all but one western moving Robinsons married a Hamilton, except for Rachael, who married John Chilicott ....

Notes for HANNAH HUTCHINSON:

pg 19 of DINN book -

paraphrased by Karenhardersittel2006

Nothing is known of her people or where she was born. A great big heavy woman with dark hair and the strength of a man. She gave some of her wages to her father, for him to buy her and Blaze a wedding present.- a set or pewter plates, some that are still held by the Robertson family. She migrated to IN in 1818 after Blazes death, to be with the rest of her family. She was raised in Harpers Ferry and might have remembered the events there during the Revolution. L:ike all "Hannahs", she was called "Hanner". Traveled 700-800 miles with son Andrew when she was in her 60's???. No gravestone, but the DINNs made a marker for her and placed it near those of John and Rachel Chilcott.

2. JOHN(B1782)3 ROBERTSON (BLAZE(B1731)2, UNK INENGLAND1)1 was born 1782 in Berkeley Co, WV1, and died 18231. He married ELIZABETH HAMILTON1 WFT Est. 1813-18441, daughter of JOHN HAMILTON and SARAH WILSON. She was born 1791 in Berkeley Co, WV1, and died 1848 in Crawford Co, ILL1.

Notes for JOHN(B1782) ROBERTSON:

....per DINN book, John Robertson family section

Besides taking scouting trips to western land, which activity took his life Oct 30-31, 1823 in southern ILL in a fight with the Indians, John seems to have been a worker in wood. ...

in the Hardy CO Militia Sixth Regiment....

After he died his wife Elizabeth married Thomas Hamilton, and had 3 children, Demspey, Oliver, and Henrietta...

There is a story to the effect that John did not die in southern ILL, but that he told his companion, Thomas Hamilton, to go back to Jackson Co with the report of the Indian attack and John's death. This Thomas is said to have done. Years later some Jackson Co Robertson in talking to some Robertsons from the southern ILL area learn that they were descendants of a John Robertson from Jackson. Extensive study of County histories and census schedules doesn't show a John Robertson who fits John Robertson, 1782-1823. The truth will probably never be known...

Martha - 1831-1863 and George had Caroline, and Louisa,Lelia and Harry, who all died young, and Caroline married a Rev William Jaclson and move to KS. Could find no trace of her.

per Blaze Robinson book by DINN, pg 105 - Samuel Robertson's recollection of his dad - John Alvin

"I was born in a log house in the White River valley, in between Seymour and Brownstown, Jan 22, 1867. My father died when I was about 3 and before my youngest sister was born. We were not wealthy, my father left us a small farm of 28 acres and by frugality and hard work we were able to live and be happy in doing our best. We attended the rural school of that day and a scholar might go as far as he could......................................In 1872 mother married Jesse L Dowden, but soon divorced him for he was so cruel..................In 1883 Mother was married to Samuel Beavers, a friend of her younger days, but who at that time lived at Malvern, IA., so we moved to Malvern and later to Nebraska for FREE LAND"

nicknamed "Black Shirt John" because he always wore a black sateen shirt...some photos on pg 105 of DINN book

Sam's Parents: (p 112-113)

The late John A. Robertson, born January 22nd, 1867 in Jackson County, Indiana near the town of Brownstown. He was oldest of three children. He and two sisters: Norna, married to O.E.Ott and raised a family in the O'Neill community and moved to Tennessee in 1915. Anna, married H.J. Worth and raised a family in the Wayne, Nebraska area.

John A's father died when he was three years old and before his youngest sister was born. My grandmother kept the family together by living conservatively, and when John was old enough, he worked and earned all he could. (At 12 years of age he worked for $7.00 per month. His sisters often earned from 50 cents to$1.00 per week, so the three helped all they could and never hear of relief).

In 1883, my Grandmother married Samuel Beavers of Malvern, IA. and with the children moved to Malvern. Although my Grandfather was a carpenter by trade, he fulfilled my Grandmother's desires and dreams of going West to the free land, so Grandpa filed on a homestead on the Northwest 1/4 of 22-31-11 in Paddock Township, about 15 miles Northeast of O'Neill, Nebraska. (Louise and I bought and made this a part of our ranch later.)

The Land Office was in Niobrara, Nebraska, and they were given six months to get on the land or forfeit their filing claim.

My Grandmother persuaded my Grandfather to trade his town property in Malvern for an old team of horse and a wagon, and sell all their household goods except that which they could take with them on their westward trek.

They joined the train of covered wagons which reached as far as they could see ahead and behind. Some had horses, some oxen and some a horse and a cow, but all with the same dream of "Free Land in the West".

They crossed the Missouri river on a ferry at Omaha, Nebraska and drove up Farnam Street and up the Elkhorn River and Railroad which ended at Creighton, Nebraska. Grandpa Beavers found plenty of work carpentering and in the Fall of 1883, took lumber from Niobrara and built a shanty on his homestead to which the rest of the family, except John, moved. My father kept his job in Niobrara where he met my mother Rachel R. Hindman. They were married on Christmas day in 1885. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1935, with all of their twelve children (six girls and six boys) present.

Mother died in 1936 and Father on their Wedding Anniversary date in 1940. In 1886, my Father took a pre-emption on eighty acres in 29-31-11, which was located just north of the place which he bought in 1887, and most of the children grew up on the home place there, Northwest 1/4 of 32-31-11.

My father, John A. Robinson, always took an active interest in Public affairs, and in 1895 and 1897 was elected to the Legislature from Holt County. In 1913, 1915 and 1917, was elected to the Senate. He introduced and secured passage of the first Mother's Pension Law in the State in 1913.

In July of 1917, on the recommendation of Governor Keith Neville, he was appointed a member of the Exemption Board for District #1 of Nebraska by President Wilson. He served on this board during the entire period of World War I, with offices in Omaha, Nebraska, where they "5 members" passed on and classified over 75,000 men. District #1 included all of Nebraska north of the Platte River.

He was elected to the senate again in 1925.

My Father's (John A. Robertson) ancestors were from the Highlands of Scotland and trace directly to the Robertson Clan Donnachaidh of Atholl of the 7th Century of which we have the complete history.

My Mother, Rachel (Hindmand) Robertson was born February 5, 1870, and moved with her parents to a homestead near Niobrara in 1880. Her ancestors are from England and through records, we have obtained, that were compiled by her Cousin, now 92 years old! Her family is traced directly to the original Pilgrims, the Mayflower and all the Lords and Dukes, etc. that go with history. Mother died June 15, 1936.

Notes for JOHN ALVIN ROBERTSON:
per Blaze Robinson book by DINN, pg 105

"I was born in a log house in the White River valley, in between Seymour and Brownstown, Jan 22, 1867. My father died when I was about 3 and before my youngest sister was born. We were not wealthy, my father left us a small farm of 28 acres and by frugality and hard work we were able to live and be happy in doing our best. We attended the rural school of that day and a scholar might go as far as he could......................................In 1872 mother married Jesse L Dowden, but soon divorced him for he was so cruel..................In 1883 Mother was married to Samuel Beavers, a friend of her younger days, but who at that time lived at Malvern, IA., so we moved to Malvern and later to Nebraska for FREE LAND "
nicknamed "Black Shirt John" because he always wore a black sateen shirt...some photos on pg 105 of DINN book
Sam's Parents: (p 112-113) - referring to John Alvin Robertson

My parents have left me a heritage of which I am justly very proud and which offers a real challenge. Their family consisted of twelve children, six boys and six girls. All of them grew to adulthood and all married.

Briefly, I will give you their names, their spouse and number of children:

  • Lottie - - Fred Weidmen 1 son, 1 daughter

Louise and I both received most of our schooling in county schools. All of mine was in School District "92", the Joy school which was less than a half mile from home.

My teachers were: George Cress, Clara Hemingway, George Murray, Hugh Campbell, Bessie Roberts, Edna Bedford, Alcie (Evans) Storjohn.

Louise's folks lived in different localities and she attended school first in a sod hour in Parmont Valley which was about thirty miles co south of Long Pine, Nebraska. Her teachers there were Claris Kaupp and Tom Dillon. Next was a school on Honey Creek and her teachers were Edna Vedford, Minnie Stein, and Nettie Cromwell. Later to the Storjohn school, teacher was Mary Ryan. She also attended high school in O'Neill.

I went to the State Farm Agricultural School in Lincoln one year and State Normal at Fremont (now Midland College) one year.

Most of our education has been at home and in the school of experience and hard knocks.

My classmates: Johnson's, Ott's, Boshart's, Erb's, Roberts' and McClellans.

Louise's classmates: Duffy's, Hughes, Dillons, Johnsons, Fullers, Benash, Putnams, Richardsons, Lent, Wabbs, Storjohns, Hynes and Sprys.

FAMILY HISTORY
Sam and Louise (Walters) Robertson

Louise and I were united in marriage in a very simple ceremony on November 9, 1921 at the home of her parents on Eagle Creek, about twenty-five miles northwest of O'Neill, Nebraska, and started our married life togerher in a new house which my father and I had built, with the help of my brothers.

It was a very modest two story house, 16x24 with full basements, and cost barn, costing about $1500.00. All the material, as well as that which was used for a barn, costing $750.00, was hauled from the "Galena Lumber Co." of O'Neill. The house was put on the Southwest 1/4 of 17-31-11 in Paddock Township, owned by my father, and later purchased by us. (Dad and I selected the site).

In 1938 we installed a 32 volt windcharger electric system and modernized our home by having hot and cold running water and converting one room into a bathroom. R.E.A. was extended to our area in 1942 and we had added 14 feet to the original house on the South and 8 feet on the East, which made a nice living room, an additional bedroom, a dinette and enclosed entrance.

We lived in the home in which we started our married life until health conditions made it impossible to be active in farming and ranching, so sold our ranch which had been our pride and joy and the fulfillment of our dreams for forty years. We sold to Carl and Dora Hallgrimson, who are wonderful folks, and we got much consolation from having the place which had become so much a part of us to into good hands.

We purchased 160 acres, Northwest 1/4 of 24-29-12, an unimproved quarter just a mile Northwest of O'Neill, built a new house on it and moved there July 2, 1962. We are very happy here and realize at this stage in life, having gone through what we have, that we often have to make adjustments because of circumstances. We have new dream, and if we have to change them, it can be done.

Louise and I celebrated our Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary in 1971, at which time we had a reunion of the Robertson family. Our three children, with most of their families were present, as well as approximately 100 direct descendants of the John A Robertson family.

Subject: Found this in the attic!

I found this in the attic Saturday...figured you'd enjoy it! One of my requirements for a Girl Scout badge was asking an older person how life was when they were eleven years old. Here’s a letter from Granny Sittel dated 5/31/75:

When I was eleven years old, I lived on a large farm in Nebraska with my parents, 7 sisters, and 1 brother. I attended school, Sunday school, & church in a one-room school house.

My Uncle John lived on the adjoining farm. He had 6 boys and 6 girls. I would ride the handle bars of one of the boys' bicycles. We would wade in the creek, play in the quick sand, and hunt duck eggs. My mother would pick the down feathers from the ducks and make all our pillows. I would help my mother thread a large loom. She made all the carpets for our home. I also helped her peel & slice apples to dry for yummy apple pies.

We had a large swing in the mulberry grove I liked to swing on. We kids would pick the ripe mulberrys & smear each others' faces. This my mother did not approve of & for punishment she would take off her apron & tie us to a chair.

We had 2 Western ponies named Comet & Cupid. I rode Cupid only once and she bucked me off into a sandburr patch. We also had an old horse that would let 5 children ride, but if 6 of us tried to ride her she would walk to the creek, roll over & dump us in the water.

At Harvest time men would bring their large threshing machines & thresh our wheat - they would make large hay stacks I liked to somersault down. The greatest fun of all was to grab a calf by the tail and run across the prairie as fast as it could go. Or jump on a cow's back that was lying down and try to ride her.

At dusk I would go with Bounce our dog and drive in 21 Milch cows. We had a wind mill in the pasture and one near the barn with a trough for the horses to drink from. Some one told me if I put a hair from a horse's tail in the trough it would turn into a snake. It never did.

On the Fourth of July we, our neighbors, and all our kin would attend an Old Settlers' picnic. We played games, ran races, and ate home made cake & ice cream.

In the winter my cousins would chop a hole in the ice and let the creek freeze over. This would make the ice smooth. I could not skate, so I would hold on to my cousin's coat tail, flex my knees, and go like the wind. Our creek was very deep and when it was frozen solid, our neighbors would help us saw the ice in large blocks, load it on a sleigh, and fill our ice house. We only used the ice to make ice cream during the summer.

When the snow was deep Dad would hitch Comet & Cupid to a sleigh & take us to town ten miles from our farm to Sunday School & church - never to school. We always walked! Dad would shovel a path to all the out buildings - the snow was so deep we could not see over it. We played hide & seek in all the paths. My brother would let us sit on the large shovel & hold on to the handle and he would drag us over the snow. At school we played Fox & Geese. You had to step on the exact tracks the Fox made.

At night when it was snowing and the wind was blowing we could hear the coyotes howl. We would all go to the parlor after supper for a sing along. One sister played the organ. One sister played the piano. My brother played the violin & Dad would play the bones. At bed time my older sister would follow us up stairs, tuck us in bed, listen to our prayers, and read to us until we fell asleep.

Oh yes, I almost forgot. We had a phonograph with a large horn that played round disk records. Our mother would only let us children play it when we were sick in bed.

Holly, I'm sure I have forgotten some of the things I did, but 63 years is a long time to try to remember.

I love you,
Granny
