Frank Hess was born Frank Hess Holeman and between 1929 and 1935 dropped the Holeman as a last name
and began using it as his middle name. It is said that the name change came about as Frank committed a
crime and by changing his name and moving his family "north" from Jackson County he avoided being
charged. Source documents verify the tentative timeline of the name change (1930 census and social
security applications).
Born December 4, 1899, his parents were George Holeman and Alice Bell Collier. Frank Hess Holeman
married Mamie Irene Mershon (DOB Sept 24, 1900) and they had 4 children, 1 of which died before
Frank was born (George Victor Holeman).
Frank's mother, Alice Bell Collier, was born July, 1861 and married (unknown) Sutton and had two
children; George W Sutton (DOB 1886) and Daniel N Sutton (DOB 1891). She then married Frank's father,
George Holeman. Her third marriage was to William Blackwell and it is unknown if there were any children
from that union.
I am still looking for Frank and Mamie's parents and siblings: George Holeman, Alice B. Collier,
Ella Roberts Mershon, Joseph Mershon, and Simmeon Thomas Mershon.
Original Mystery
I think this individual was named Frank Hess Holeman. I also believe
that between 1920 and 1930 he changed his name to Frank Holeman Hess.
Married Mamie Meashon (or Mershon?) Attached is his WWI Draft
Registration. According to Frank’s obituary (Attached) at the time of
his death (August 1974) he had 3 children; Evelyn T. (married name;
Elwell of Brownstown, Indiana), Lewis G. Hess, and Frank H. Hess, Jr. I
found Frank Jr's birth certificate as Frank Holeman but can't find the
other kids. I can't find any of them on the 1930 Census Records.
