Mrs Ellen Louise Spies Hartman, seventy-two years old, died Saturday morning at 4:45 o'clock at her residence at 445 Henry Street. She had been ill since January of 1920 when she suffered a stroke of paralysis. She had been seriously ill since January of this year. Mrs Hartman was born Sept 6, 1850 in Reading, Pa. to Delas (should say Elias) and Elizabeth Spease. She came to Huntington with her parents when she was four years old. She married Jacob Hartman on Oct 14, 1869, and has lived in Huntington since that time. Mr Hartman died January 16, 1919.

Surviving children are Charles Hartman at home, Mrs Edward E. Hosteler of Los Angeles, Cal., Ida Hartman, Lee Hartman, and Kathryn Hartman at home, Mrs Fred Foster of Huntington and Mrs Herbert Bunce of Huntington. The only grandchild is Virginia Bunce. One sister, Mrs Mae McFarren of Alhambra, Cal, also survives. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the residence with the Rev. W.T. Angus in charge. Burial will be at Mt Hope Cemetery.

Charles Edgar Hartman, 66, in the tailoring business in the city for a number of years, died at his home, 445 Henry St, at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, following a month's illness. Mr Hartman was born Aug 7, 1870 to Jacob & Ellen Hartman, and attended the public school here. Later he entered a cutting and fitting school known as the John G. Mitchell School in New York City. At the age of 17 he returned to this city and was engaged with his father in the tailoring business for a number of years. Later he was in similar business with Ed Robinson and in 1912 assumed ownership of the store. He retired from active business about a month ago when he became ill.

Brothers and sisters are: Mrs E.E. Hichstetler, Los Angeles, Calif, Miss Ida Hartman, Lee Hartman, Mrs Fred Foster, Miss Catherine Hartman and Mrs Clytie Bunce, all of this city. A niece, Virginia Bunce also survives. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the residence, the Rev. D.R. Hutchinson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Mt Hope cemetery.

Mrs Mary E. Hartman Hostetler, 90, who formerly resided at 719 East Tipton St, died at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday in the Town and Country Nursing Home where she had been a patient since 1958. She had been ill seven years and was seriously ill one month. Mrs Hostetler was born Nov. 18, 1872, to Jacob and Helen Spease Hartman in Huntington. She was graduated from Huntington High School in 1894 and from Indiana University in 1898 with Cum Laude in Latin. She taught mathematics and Latin in high schools at Tipton, Peru, and Huntington, and later in Lincoln High School, Los Angeles, Calif., where she retired in 1937. She returned to this city in 1957.

She married Edward Hostetler July 27, 1913, in California, where he died July 27, 1949. Mrs Hostetler was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a charter member of Pi Beta Phi at IU, and a member of the Shakespeare Club in this city. Surviving are two sisters, Miss Katherine Hartman and Mrs Clytie Bunce, with whom Mrs Hostetler lived prior to going to the nursing home, and a niece Mrs Earl (Virginia) Cass, Decatur. Friends may call after 7 p.m. today in the Merck Funeral Home where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Wallace B. Rummel officiating. Burial will be in Mt Hope Cemetery.

She accepted employment with the United Telephone company in 1903 under the management of the late James Hessin. She continued in telephone work with the Indiana Bell Telephone company serving as operator, chief operator and as cashier in the business until her retirement in 1934. Miss Hartman was a member of the Telephone Pioneers Club and the First Presbyterian Church, this city.

Hostetler of Puente, Calif., Miss Katherine Hartman and Mrs Clytie Bunce, this city, a sister, Mrs Hattie Foster and two brothers, Charles and Lee, are dead. He had been employed by the Orton Crane and Shovel company for 20 years and previous to his last illness was a foreman. He was always interested in bowling and was a member of the local bowling league.

      Surviving are five sisters, Mrs Mary Hosteller, of near Los Angeles, Calif., Miss Ida Hartman, Mrs Fred Foster, Mrs Clytie Bunce, and Miss Katherine Hartman, all of this city, and a niece, Miss Virginia Bunce. Hartman, 84, died at 7:40 p.m. Monday in the Decatur Hospital, where she had been a patient since last Friday. Miss Hartman had made her home with her niece, Mrs Earl Cass, Decatur, following her retirement until last summer when she entered the Cooper nursing Home at Decatur where she became seriously ill and was removed to the hospital. Native and resident of Huntington most of her life, Mrs Clytie Louise Hartman Bunce, 78, who had resided with her daughter, Mrs Earl Cass of Decatur since April 1965, died at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Castle Convalescent Home, VanWert, Ohio, where she had resided since Nov, 1965. She had been ill the last two years. Mrs Bunce, the last of a family of seven children, was born Sept 12, 1888, to Jacob and Ellen Spease Hartman, whose family homestead was on Henry St. She was a saleslady for many years at the Sowerwine Dept, Store and the Metzer Ladies Shop and was last employed in the office of the Community Nurse in the City Building. She retired about six years ago.

Surviving are the daughter, Mrs Earl (Virginia) Cass, and a grandson, James Cass, both of Decatur. Brothers and sisters were Mary E. Hostetler, Ida L. Hartman, Hattie Foster, Katherine I. Hartman, Charles and Lee Hartman. Mrs Bunce was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Decatur, and the Order of Eastern Star here. Friends may call after 7 p.m. today in the Mercx Funeral Home where twilight services by members of the Order of Eastern Star will be at 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in the funeral home with Rev. Wallace B. Rummel, this city, and Rev. Albert Smith, Decatur, officiating. Burial will be in Mt Hope Cemetery.

Virginia Bunce Cass, 84, of Decatur died at 12:50 a.m. Thursday, (Nov 25, 1999) at the Adams County Memorial Hospital in Decatur. Mrs Cass was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Delta Gamma Sorority, Psi Iota Xi and former member of the Eastern Star. She was born Nov 22, 1915, in Huntington to Herbert T. Bunce and Clytie L. Hartman Bunce. She married Earl L. Cass, who died in 1990.

Survivors include a son, James R. Cass of Decatur, and two grandchildren. Calling is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday and noon-2 p.m. Saturday at Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home, Decatur. Service is at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Rev. Tom Steensam officiating. Burial will be at the Decatur Cemetery.
