The Knightstown Banner

The Banner has recently posted an index of all obituaries that have been published in the Banner from 1908 through 2001. Obituaries published after 2001 are posted on their site in their entirety and those are indexed by issue date/year. The 1908-2001 index includes nearly 30,000 names. They are hoping some of the "empty boxes" can be filled in by visitor participation, as those early obits did not always provide a lot of details. Knightstown being located where it is, the obits do span a wide area including Henry, Rush, and Hancock counties.

Their website also includes over 150 genealogy columns that Stacy Cox wrote detailing information found in census & marriage records. This may not provide a lot of new info to those researchers who have already found their ancestors in Knightstown census records, but the columns may help bring into focus their ancestors neighbors, etc. There are also two (somewhat) weekly columns - "How Time Flies in News" and "How Time Flies in Sports" that are published in The Banner and then posted to their website. These might also help add some color to those with Knightstown roots.

Newspaper research is probably one of the most under-utilized areas of research for genealogists. The reason being, it is very time consuming and tedious work.

What can you find in newspapers?

  • Marriages
  • Deaths
  • Births
  • Biographical Sketches
  • Local News
  • and much more

These are just some examples of items that can be found in newspapers. Newspaper research is an addition to your genealogy that could provide clues and information about your ancestors that you might not otherwise know about. Plan a trip to your local library to find out what they have available in their newspaper collection.

The Henry County INGenWeb Newspaper website is blessed with having received contributions by researchers that have an interest in Henry County, Indiana genealogy and history. We thank you!
