Shiloh Cemetery lies across the road from the site of the Methodist Episcopal Church of that same name. The church house "was erected in 1854 or 1855 on land obtained from Elias Lyon. He and his wife Nancy McVicker were charter members of this church." The building has been removed from its original site and only the foundation stones and cement steps give evidence of the once thriving church. Elias Lyon is said to have killed the last deer in Jefferson Township. Michael Pugh came to Jefferson Township in 1834 and located in Sect. 13, he made a gift of three acres for this cemetery. He was a member of the Methodist Protestant church but his wife Elizabeth Caudy Pugh was a charter member of the Shiloh Methodist Episcopal Church. This cemetery is two and a half miles south of Upland and a half mile east. It is a beautiful, well kept place and is in present day use. The earliest date is on that of Mary S. McHenry age 17-Feb. 15, 1841. The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's. This reading of the Shiloh Cemetery was done April 15-16, 2004. By Rick and Karen Marshall with the help of her sister Janet Eastburn and her brother Gary Keith. Janet proof-read it. There were a lot of discrepancies from the DAR reading. They double and triple checked the number changes, especially the 1 and 4, and other look alike numbers. Weather was beautiful for reading. Thanks so much for all the hard work. It turns out that Mary S. McHenry died in 1844 as well as 5 other siblings in this family, all dying within a month of each other. Must have been a really bad sickness. Earliest date is Lydia J. McHenry - she died Feb 10, 1844. I counted 8 marked Civil War Soldiers in this cemetery. The last burial occurred in 1998. But most burials had stopped by 1945. The DAR had read 260 burials in the 1940's, we now have recorded 374, which is a total read for the cemetery. This cemetery is located in the S.E. 1/4 of the S.E. 1/4 of Section # 15 Range 9 E. Twp. 23 N. on 1000 E. at 800 S.
