SALEM

Salem, a United Brethren church, was erected on the David Culbertson farm in 1857. It was dedicated by Bishop Edwards of Dayton, Ohio. Samuel Woolman the first school teacher of Washington Township and Dennis Dailey a veteran of the War of 1812 took an active part in the erection of this building. Some years ago the building was sold and moved away to another location.

This cemetery is one mile east of Marion on the Pike which bears its name. The remains of at least three Veterans of the War of 1812 lie in this forgotten place, Maurice Howard, Adam Feightner and Abijah Cox. The latter has no stone but according to Miss Jennie Eby he lies beside his wife who has a marker.

The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's.

This cemetery is located in the N.E. 1/4 of the N.E. 1/4 of Section #32 Range 8 E. Twp. 25 N. on 200 N. (Salem Pike) 1/2 mile east of 150 E. at King Rd. I worked in this cemetery in the summer of 1996. Much damage has been done in the past, but great effort has been taken to repair and replace broken or missing stones, as you can see from the readings. I found a lot of replacement stones for older ones that may have disappeared or become very illegible. Many of them were still in place with a newer one right next to or near the older one. Several of the stones had sunken far below the surface with only the very top of them showing. I dug these out to read them and slipped them back into place, hoping someone will someday see they are above ground now and reset them.

The Salem church is now a thing of the past. Like so many of the older churches, they are disappearing very fast. Our young folks want more than these older churches could offer, so they attend church in the city now, where the congregations are much larger and have many things to offer. The Elks Country Club lies just to the west and south of the cemetery. While working here I found several golf balls from the golf course.

The cemetery is well cared for. No weeds or briars to speak of. One thing I liked about it is they left the trees and bushes. I felt very comfortable in this cemetery. It is one of the nicer ones in the township. There were several flower patches scattered about also. The middle part of this cemetery seems to be the oldest. When they expanded they seemed to have went north and south of the original.
