INDEPENDENCE/RIGDON CEMETERY

The cemetery at Rigdon lies on the south side of the road which is the Township line between Madison and Grant Counties but since many of the citizens of Grant County lie buried there, we include the abstract of the cemetery in this book.

Independence was laid out in 1851 on land in four townships and two counties. The counties being Grant and Madison; the townships Liberty and Greene in Grant and Boone and Duck Creek in Madison County. According to Mrs. William C. Miller, Daniel Newkirk and his wife Polly owned the land in Duck Creek Township; Daniel Bayless and his wife Sarah owned the land in Green Township; Prior Rigdon the land in Liberty Township; the land for the cemetery was donated by Eli and Matilda Hiatt. For a period of years it was known as Independence. It was laid out in 1851. In 1855 a post office was located there and the name changed to Rigdon because there was already a post office by that name in the state. The earliest date on a monument is May 12, 1851.

A pathetic evidence of how soon one is forgotten is the monument reared to the memory of John Kenney who was wounded and died at the Battle of Missionary Ridge during the Civil War. I have tried to find something about this young man but have not yet succeeded. The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's.

I worked in this cemetery in the late summer of 1996. A few years ago I visited this cemetery and people were busy resetting stones that had been down for many years. They now are in neat rows, but probably not where they were originally, but this cannot be helped. They poured many new bases and used angle iron to hold some of them together. This made it a little difficult to read as the edges were covered by the angle iron. We have to give them credit though, it does look much better than it did.

There is a cross in the front of this cemetery about 6 feet high with a memorial plate on the bottom which reads:

"In Memory of our War Dead
both here and in other lands."

The following was contributed by Harriet Smalley;
On the 31st of May 1952 the cross was dedicated to the service men. The cross was made by Earl Day and set by himself. I was the President of the Fairmount American Legion Auxiliary 313 and presented the cross as a memorial. We had the American Legion firing squad of which my husband, Harold Smalley, was a member and we also had taps but do not remember who it was that played taps.
Harriet Smalley

The earliest burial I found was William B. son of A.F. & F.J. Seward died May 12, 1851. The latest was that of Frank Barton 1939. Very few burials were made here after the turn of the century.

The best way to reach this cemetery is to take Ind. 37 south out of Marion to Rigdon. The county line runs through Rigdon which is 1200 S. in Grant County and 1900 N. in Madison County, turn left and it's right there on the south side of the road.

Wills, Margaret July 26, 1824 - Sept. 22, 1897 S/S with Shepherd Shepherd Mar. 8, 1822 - Feb. 8, 1897 S/S with Margaret Unknown, Harry Hayes ____ died May 30, 1860 aged 3y.3d. Children of __ & __ Ma___ (This is all I could make out on this stone, it is clear there was more than one child listed and you could tell the top of the stone with at least one more name, was missing. Badly weathered and illegible.) William son of _____ (Appears to be a child as there is a lamb at the top and it is a very small stone. The bottom was gone.) Unknown died Oct. 12, 185_ aged 2y.4m.8d. (The last name appears to start with Ph____, the whole stone was there but badly weathered and illegible.) There were also at least 3 more stones I could make nothing out of, which would account for most of the asterisks you find in this reading.
