OAK RIDGE CEMETERY

Located in Liberty Township in section # 23 this little cemetery is now very seldom used. This is a Quaker settlement and has the church and school - house across the road from the cemetery. This church was organized in 1842. The earliest date is June 5, 1849. There may have been earlier burials but the Quakers were not so much concerned about grave markers in the early days.

The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's.

I worked in this cemetery in the summer of 1996. The best way to get to this cemetery is to leave Marion on State Rd. #9 south, go to 800 S. and turn right or west. Go just past 100 W. You will see the church, which is still there, either recently redone or rebuilt on the right hand or north side of the road and the cemetery on the left or south side of the road. The school is now gone. There have been some changes in the church over the years. The Oak Ridge Friends and the Radley Friends united into one church. At that time they changed the name to Countryside Friends. More changes were needed in order to survive, so last July Countryside Friends united with Little Ridge and changed their name again. They are now called Liberty Friends North and Liberty Friends South. As with most of the smaller churches, times are changing and the young folks are going to the larger churches because they have so much more to offer. Those few smaller churches that are left dotted around our country-side are fast becoming a thing of the past.

Most of the stones are down in this cemetery and leaning against the trees. It is being mowed, but nothing is being done about resetting these stones. Another interesting thing I want to note is the many flagstones I found, mostly piled under the trees. Many graves were evidently marked in this cemetery with just a flagstone in the earlier years of this cemetery, which was done quite often by the Quakers.

I found one stone that was an extraordinary find. Elizabeth Chopsin aged 110 yrs. 9 mo. She died Jan. 18, 1870. In all my work in the cemeteries of Grant County, I have never found anyone that lived to be 110 yrs. old. Her stone is lying flat on the ground, broken off at the base. They should have built a shrine to her. This lady had lived through the Revolutionary War and seen America gain her Independence, she saw the War of 1812 and also seen the country become divided against themselves in the Civil War. Of course this is all conjecture, she may have been a recent immigrant. But to have lived to be 110 yrs. old, just imagine what all she probably seen and experienced.

The earliest date I found was Kevenhappuch Gaunt died June 5, 1849, the last marked burial was Jose Partida died 1930. I only found evidence of 2 burials past 1900.

*Asterisk denotes a stone not found at this time.
