MORRIS CHAPEL

Morris Chapel is a church of the Methodist Denomination and the first church was erected in 1864. The cemetery adjoining was there many years before the church building for the earliest date on a stone is Sept. 23, 1839. The place is still in use and is on the highest ground of the township. The Huntington Pike passes it and is a greatly traveled up-to-date highway. The farming community is well to do and the church and cemetery give every evidence of their pride and enterprise. Several veterans of the Civil War lie buried here. One of these is Captain William S. Bradford of the 37 Regiment Indiana Volunteers.

This cemetery is in Section #17 of Washington Township.

The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's.

I worked in this cemetery May of 1994. I found many more stones, than the DAR had recorded, mostly because of the date they had decided to quit at. I have listed everything I could find. Back in the 1960's, I believe, is when the old church was torn down, and the new one built. The new church is much farther back from the road than the previous one had been. There are stories about a house at 5362 N. EOOW, as being moved from the present site of Morris Chapel Church, to this address. I don't know if this house was part of the old church or parsonage for the pastor to live in, at the time. The house has been built on to several times, but when in the attic you can see the original frame.

A few years back the parsonage, at the church, was burned down and new one was built for the preacher and his family. This church and cemetery sits on the corner of S. R. 9 (the old Huntington Pike) and 450 N. Burials have been sparse, through the years, but they continue to use this cemetery through this date.

The stone referred to by the DAR as dating back to 1839, is incorrect. This stone reads Sept. 23, 1859 Mary Ann wife of J. S. Bradford. Evidently this cemetery was in existence before the church was established. The earliest stone I found was that of Mabel dau of Rev. W.S. & L.H. Bradford died June 19, 1858 aged 1m.21d.

The DAR recorded 47 people in this cemetery. I found 117 people.

* Denotes a stone not found at this time.
