This cemetery has one of the most beautiful locations of any in the county. Fine highways almost encircle it. A nice brick church is just across the way. A few large cedar trees are in the plot and a magnificent oak stand at the gate as a sentinel. The grass is kept mowed and no briars or underbrush is found here. The earliest date on a stone is March 25, 1837. It marks the grave of Richard Carter the son of Samuel and Mary Carter. The Harmony Baptist Church was organized on February 22, 1845. Land for the church building was obtained from John Richards and it was built in 1847 or 1848. Many people by the name of Richards are buried in this cemetery which is still being used by residents of this community. This place is on the Muncie Pike, in Jefferson Township, section #28 on the banks of Crawford Creek. William Leach a Veteran of the War of 1812 is buried here. The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's. Thanks to Rick and Karen Marshall and Janet Eastburn this cemetery was re-done November 8, 2002. They read every stone and increased the reading two-fold. There are close to 500 individuals buried there, dating back to the death of Richard son of Samual and Mary Carter who died March 25, 1837. This cemetery predates the New Harmony Baptist Church by about 10 years. This cemetery is located in the S.W. 1/4 of the N.E. 1/4 of Section 4 Township 22 N. Range 9 E. The creek mentioned in the above DAR write-up is not Crawford Creek. It was named on the oldest map I have as 3 mile Branch of Cariens Creek. The 1877 map called it Kirkwoods Creek and the newer maps call it Hoppas Ditch. Crawford Creek is a mile north of this one. You may take the Wheeling Pike out of Jonesboro to get to this cemetery. The Wheeling Pike is also known as Old State Road #35 or the Muncie Pike. Another option is to take I-69 south to the Fairmount exit. This is St. Rd. 26. When you get off the interstate head east on State Rd. 26 (the other way goes to Fairmount), this should only be about 1 1/2 miles. This road going north and south, is Wheeling Pike/Muncie Pike/old St. Rd. 35. It goes by all three names. I think it says Wheeling Pike at this point, but am not sure so watch for it by all three names. When you find this road, there is a Capt. Hooks Duck farm on the northeast corner and the northwest corner is a wildlife sanctuary or bird sanctuary. Actually it is going slightly north-north west and south-south east at this crossroads but this is it. Turn right or south and proceed about 2 miles to 1125 S. and on your left is a church and across this east/west road is the cemetery, clearly visible from Wheeling Pike and the east/west road. The last time I was there that east/west road looked more like a well traveled driveway but it is really county road 1125 S. So the address of this cemetery is the corner of Wheeling Pike and 1125 S. It is a long narrow cemetery right on the road. No drives are in it, so you will have to walk it.* denotes 'No stone found' as of Nov. 8, 2002 Adkins, S.J. 1836 - 1922 Ailes, Amos 1868 - 1955 (stone next to Amos & Olive's joint stone) Amos 1821 - 1900 (S/S Olive) Olive 1832 - 1917 (S/S Amos d. 1900) Angel, William died Sept. 20, 1873 aged 83y.
