HENDERSON FIELDS FAMILY HISTORY
Henderson Fields was born on May 19, 1806 in Butcher's Valley,
Hawkins County, in the wilds of Tennessee. He was the third
of seven children, and second of six sons, born to William (b. abt 1780,
d.?) and Jedida (or Judidah, b. abt 1780, d. 17May1861)
Fields. William and Jedida's seven children were William,
Elizabeth, Henderson, Dempsey, Russell, Jackson and
Ellerson. Henderson's death certificate lists William Fields
as father, but his mother is not listed. However, Dempsey's
Marriage Certificate lists William Fields as father and
Judida Fields as mother. We have no records of birth and marriage
for William and Jedida, but we believe they might have been
born in Hawkins Co. while it was still part of North Carolina (or possibly
the Watauga Association or the State of
Franklin)*.
On October 27, 1834, Henderson married Miss Alzira Fields (b.
1820), a cousin several degrees removed. Up to this time
Henderson had been a tiller of the soil, but in 1834 he and his wife
Alzira, his married brothers and their families, and Jedida
moved to Randolph County, Indiana. Family records state that "they walked"
to Indiana, probably using the trail through the Cumberland
Gap. In the 1850 census, Henderson and Alzira were living in
Grant Co., Pleasant Twp., Indiana. There they resided until
1853.
Census records show that Henderson's occupation while in Indiana
was farming. Nine children were born to Henderson and
Alzira in the 19 years they resided in Indiana. These children were Marie
(or Maria, b. 9 Dec 1836, d. 20 Jan 1911 in Palmyra, NE),
Melinda (b. 28 Sep 1838, d. ?), Marena (b. 13 Nov 1841, d. 18 Aug 1842),
Marthy Elen (b. 27Nov1843, d. 25Mar1849), Henderson, Jr.
(my grandfather, b. 13Feb1846, d. 19Jun1901 in Bennet, NE),
Margery (b. 1Sep1848, d. 22Mar1936 in Bennet, NE), Daniel (b.
22Jul1850, d. 24Sep1850), Sary Jane (b. 13Sep1851, d.
15Sep1852), and Mary Eliza (b. 3Aug1853, d. 27Feb1927 in Palmyra, NE). It
must have been a hard life for these hardy pioneers. They
lost several of their children at an early age while they were trying to
carve out a place for their family.
In 1853, Henderson and his growing family moved to Wisconsin.
Census records of 1860 show that they lived in Grant Co.,
Lima Twp., Wisconsin and that Henderson's occupation was listed as
carpenter. Two children were born to Henderson and Alzira
in the 12 years they resided in Wisconsin: Frederick Tucker (b. 2Jul1856,
d. 29Jan1860) and William (b. 31Jul1859, d. 19Apr1937 in
Bennet, NE). Henderson lived in Wisconsin with his family until
about 1865, when he moved again.
This time the Fields family moved by covered wagon to Nebraska,
Henderson taking a homestead of 160 acres (he was now 59
years old) in Otoe county, about four miles west of Palmyra, near the
Little Nemaha river. Some years later they moved to Bennet,
three miles from the old homestead, and it was here that Henderson and
Alzira spent their declining years.
Henderson was a great admirer of Abraham Lincoln. He was born in
the neighboring state of Tennessee three years before
Lincoln was born in Kentucky. Family documents state that Henderson "knew
the man".
When sixteen years of age Henderson united with the Methodist
Church, and was a member for a number of years. Later, on
March 15, 1874, while residing in Nebraska, he united with the Reorganized
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was
ordained an elder in this church on March 29 of the same year and served
in that capacity up to the time of his death.
Alzira Fields died March 7, 1899 at the age of 79 in Bennet, NE,
and Henderson died on June 19, 1910 in Bennet, NE at the
age of 104. |

I have a copy of a letter written by Della Gano, a grand daughter
of James Russell White. It is dated August 5th 1968. It
reads ".....he (James) saw his grandparents (
the parents of Drury White) married. They passed a law that
the Chief couldn't marry
his people so they called in all their children and he (James) was there & a preacher married them
again. I listened to him tell that several times he use to come
over to the house for supper......." |

Drury Andrew White
Drury's brothers are James, Charles, Willis. His sister is shown as
"Mrs. Starnes". Mrs Starnes, her daughter Sallie, and Sallies'
husband are reported to have died together when their home was struck by
lighting.
Willis moved to Tipton Indiana for a time and then moved back to
TN.
Drury was a farmer, land surveyor, and
school reacher, Drury A . White was born Sept. 1796 (some records show
1802) in N.C. (now TN) His early years were spent in
Rogersville, Hawkins County, TN. There he and his brother Charles worked
on the farm of Obediah and Avis
Fields. His mother's name is reported to be "LUCKIDA".
During the war of 1812 he was a sergant
and a scout with the mounted gunmen of Capt Mathew Pattison's
company in Col N.T. Perkins' regiment of
East Tennessee militia. He served under his middle name of Andrew
In 1827 , he married Elizabeth Fields in
Rogersville. She was born on 3 may 1803. She is the daughter of
William and Jedida Fields. She is
the first of his two wives and they are the parents of 10 children,
including a set of twins, Andrew
Jackson "Jack" White and Mary Jane White .
Drury brought his family to Indiana in
Nov 1834 and first settled near Deerfield in Randolph County, IN. He
farmed and taught school there until
1843 when he moved to Pleasant township, Grant County IN and farmed
near Jalapa. He also taught school in
Grant Co for three months a year at Swamp, Jalapa, and Eltzroth
Schools.
Drury's brother , Charles remained in
Rogersville TN and eventually lived with his son , Drury Andrew
White. This Drury was married
about 4 times that I could track. This fact(the other Drury) is the reason
some of the details have been abit
muddled about our Drury. Thus far I have found 7 Drury White's. All living
about the same time.
His first wife , Elizabeth , died on
January 14, 1864 at the age of 60 years She was buried in Whiteneck
cemetery, Pleasant Township, Grant Co,
IN In 1868 he married Mary
Jane Summers. They were the parents of 5 children the youngest being born
when Drury was 80 years
old. Drury died on Nov 9
1877 at Japapa at the age of 81 years. He was buried in Whiteneck cemetery
beside his first wife , Elizabeth.
His second wife, Jane live until passing away on 7 Apr 1923, in Wabash

someother information from Doug
Jenkins I am a descendant of
Charles White and his wife (name unknown) through a son named Alfred who
was born in about 1839 and married
in late 1860 to Mary "Pop" Maloney. They had my gr gr grandmother Anna
Jane White b. 1861 and Margaret P.
White b. 1862. Alfred White was drafted into the Confederate Army and
killed at the Battle of
Murfreesboro (AKA Stones River). Mary Maloney White married Robertson
Dykes and had some more kids
before she died in 1875.
Here are Charles Whites' children that I know of:
Drury A. White - you are familiar
with. James White - had
several children Alfred
White - my ancestor Francis
Marion White - died in 1866 from injuries rec'd in Civil War (2
kids) Malinda White m.
Nehemiah Fry - Nehemiah moved to New Mexico.
Malinda is believed to have died out
there. I know that Charles
White had several other children, but I have been unable to identify
them. I have done some
research in Hawkins County Land Records that may interest you. In the
Hawkins County Surveyors Records
1824-1826, I found severalreferences to our Whites as follows:
1824 survey for Charles White on
Honneycutt's Creek the chain carriers were Martin Fields and Drury
White. 1825 survey for
Willis White on Honneycutt's Creek the chain carriers were Abraham Britton
and Drury White. 1824 survey
for James Charles chain carriers were John Webster and Charles
White. 2 Oct. 1827 - grant
to Charles White, 50 acres including "Dida Fields' ("JEDIDA" or "Judida")
former improvement" on
Honneycutt's Creek. 1824
survey for Richard Surgenor "between the claims of Willis White and
Charles White". Chain carriers were
Martin Fields and Charles
White. 1827 survey for
Stephen Bailey on Honeycutt's Creek. Chain carriers were James White and
Drury White 1827 survey for
Charles . Miller on Honeycutt's Creek. Chain carriers were Charles White
and Abraham Britton. 182?
survey for Willis White on Honeycutt's Creek. Chain Carriers were Abraham
Britton and Drury White.
182? survey for Abraham Britton on Honeycutt's Creek. Chain Carriers were
Carr Bailey and Drury White.
182? survey for Gilson Powell. Chain carriers were Drury White and William
Rice. Pardon me for not
getting more details, but I was in a hurry when I wrote those down. What I
conclude from the above is that
Charles, Drury, Willis, and James White apparently all lived on Honeycutt
Creek in from 1824 to 1827 at
least. Willis, Drury, and Charles White all sold their land in the early
1830's. We know that Drury went to
Randolph Co., IN with the Fields and Charles stayed behind. So what
happened to James and Willis White and
why are they not on the 1830 Hawkins
County Census? We also know
that Drury and Charles are probably brothers and Charles was b. 1795 in NC
- Drury b. 1800 in NC. We do not
know the age of Willis or James so neither could be ruled out as the
father; however, it's a long
stretch to say that either is the father too.
I welcome your input. Let me know what
you think.

Martin Van Buren Fields (about 1799 to

The family of Martin Fields followed
cousin Lansford Fields to Randolph Co in 1832 and only David and Deck
of the children were b in the

Elizabeth, Charles A., and David and remained in the county for succeeding
generation. William H migrated to
Linn Co MO: Andrew and Deck to Adams Co IN : christoper C, to Grant Co IN

the Probable grandfather of the Randolph

Surry Co, NC . later to divided
into Stokes Co in 1780 He late migrated to Hawkins co TN where he enterd
land on the south side of the
Holston River, Bays Mountains in 1796.
There was a considerable migration of
families from Hawkins Co TN into Wad and Jackson Townships of
Randolph Co . Several Children of
Obediah (son of Lansford) and Avis Fields along with their Families
moved into northern Randolph co
after 1830. those included Lansford ( the grandson of Lansford), susannah
(KEY), Perry, Mary (Bragg),
William s. and Priscilla (smith): all cousins of martin fields. Of this
branch the parents,Obediah and
Avis, and sons Obediah Jr. and Bird remained in TN.
Another group migrated to Randolph Co and
were cousins of both groups above. the sons and daughter of
William and Jedida Fields. William
passed away prior to the family leaving TN. Of their Children; William Jr
, Elizabeth ( wife of DRURY
WHITE), and Russell, moved on to Grant Co IN.. Henderson(Anderson)
Fields remained in IN for a time
before eventually passing away in Otoe Co NE, Dempsey to Wisconson;
and Ellerson
to Havensville KS. Jedida ("Dida")
remarried to William sizemore about 1850 and continued to live in
Randolph Co and is buried next to
Mr Sizemore.
Still another group of cousins, the
family of Margaret Fields migrated to Randolph co from TN at about the
same time. Her known brother and
sister were Alsey, Mary (Baugh), christopher, and Poindexter:

Edith was a member of the "Shaker" religion and is said to have
made thebest fried chicken in the County. She left Daniel when his
drinking became out of control. She and her son, Asher
homesteaded about 6 miles out of Lost Springs Wyoming, near to
where her family had settled. She was a popular school teacher there.
Asher left for WWI and served in the American Artillery in
France and was quite shaken by what he experienced in the Battle
of Argon Forest. Today we would call it Post Tramatic
Stress Symdrome. Then it was just "shell shock". After the war
he went to work in the oil Fields of Alberta, Canada.
There he met my grandmother, Zelma Marie Provost. They were
later married and moved to his homestead farm in Lost Springs.
There they had 5 children, Rita Mae, Dawna , Clarence Leo (my
father), Maynard, and Rose. In the winter time Asher drove
the school bus. Times were hard so Asher moved his family to
Wyser Idaho and worked for the railroad at the roundhouse in Hunington
Oregon. Then later moved to Nampa, Idaho.
My father married Barbara Alice Cheney (second cousin to Vice
President , Dick cheney) in 1955. My brother David was born in
1960, I was born in 1965. We both live in Utah with our
families. |
