My grandfather, Robert McGibbon, came to this country July 9th, 1884
from Killynure, County Down, Ireland. After spending time with relatives
near Sweetser, Tipton and Idaville, Indiana he went West in 1890 to
Cedros Island, Mexico and Calico, California. He returned to Indiana in
1895 to marry his sweetheart, Agnes Shafer of Idaville, Carroll county,
Indiana. After spending less than a year in California they returned to
Indiana. The 24th of June, 1896 Robert McGibbon purchased a farm, sec. 14,
Sims Twp., Grant county, which he named "Esperanza". He became a sucessful
farmer.
Robert became active in politics and was elected to the Grant County
Council in 1914, representing the 4th district of Sims Twp. In 1920 he became
the President of the Grant County Council. May the 4th 1920 Robert McGibbon
ran for State Representive on the Republican ticket, # 6 on the ballot.
Of the five men who ran Albert Shugart got 1,922 votes and Robert McGibbon
got 1,562 votes. They were to represent the Republican ticket in the general
election in November, 1920.
At the Republican Convention in Indianapolis a small clerical error
was found in Robert McGibbon's citizenship papers that disqualified him.
He thought he had been a legal citizen since 1888. Robert McGibbon reapplied
for citizenship and received full citizenship the 9th of February 1921.
Robert and Agnes McGibbon had 10 children.
Robert McGibbon was born 12th of February 1866, Killynure, Ireland
and died at his home in Swayzee the 10th of June 1945.
