BETHEL CEMETERY “The old Coleman Homestead of pioneer days is now the home of Mr. & Mrs. Dan Payne. It is on the Muncie Pike, three miles south - east of Jonesboro. Here lived Daniel and Mary Coleman in those early days. The land for Bethel Cemetery was donated by them. A church was built there by the Methodists in 1835 but has long since been gone. The cemetery is used by members of the older families of the community but burials are becoming less frequent. In this place lies the remains of Isaac Suddeth a soldier of the Revolutionary War and the father of Mrs. Coleman.” From “Making of a Township”, by Edgar Baldwin. Many other representatives of pioneer families are buried here. Dulings, Johnson, Bates, Baldwin and many others. The above was written by the DAR in the 1940’s. This cemetery has deteriorated a lot since it was read in the 1940’s. Many stones are now missing that were there when the DAR read it. It is one of the oldest in the county dating back to a burial in 1831. Last burials took place in 1932. There are 6 identified Civil War Soldiers buried here and 1 Revolutionay War Soldier. In the last few years a new stone has been placed on the grave of Isaac Suddeth the Rev. War Soldier. Daniel and Mary Coleman are also buried in this cemetery. Rick and Karen Marshall read this cemetery. They picked up 187 burials of which only 15 were done after 1900, representing 56 family names. This cemetery is no longer in use. Located in the S.W. ¼ of the S.W. ¼ of Section #17 Range 8 E. Twp. 22 N. just south of the Mississinewa River on the Wheeling Pike just past 400 E. There is a huge white garage or chicken house right next to the road with a little parking area in front. The cemetery is right behind this building. I just parked in the front and walked back to it. *Denotes a stone not found at this time. Bethel Cemetery Allen, Joseph B. died Feb. 14, 1854 aged 58y.1m.25d. Sarah wife of J.B.
