Back Creek Cemetery has been used since 1830 when Exum Newby's wife was buried there. A total of over 2400 have been made in this plat. Burials were made in no special order and for many years markers of any kind were not used. Several hundred quarry stones were placed at the head of graves at the direction of the Northern Quarterly Meeting of Friends according to Whitson's History of Grant County page 580. The stones used in recent years are very modest and many of the inscriptions cannot be deciphered. Only an occasional interment is made here in these later days. Among the number resting here are many who had a great deal to do with the early life of the County, the Baldwin, Harvey, Newby, Hill, Davis and Broderick families are all represented. The cemetery is located near a church house by the same name according to a custom of pioneer days. Two miles north of Fairmount the Society of Friends built their first Meeting house in 1831. The first sermon was preached by Nathan Morris. The church and Cemetery were given the name of the Creek which flows just west of them on its journey to meet the Mississinewa. This is what the DAR wrote in the 1940's. Located in the N.E. 1/4 of the S.W. 1/4 of Section #17 Range 8 E. Twp. 22 N. on 150 E. (Old Sand Pike) about a mile north of Fairmount. The land for this cemetery was donated to the church by Henry Winslow. The burial records for this cemetery have either been lost or very incomplete. No one has an accurate account of who was really buried there. Many graves were marked by fieldstones and many more weren't marked at all. This cemetery belonged to the Back Creek Friends Church from about 1830 until 1900 or there abouts when it was abandoned by the church and given to the township. In 1889 a new cemetery was opened just south of Back Creek named Park Cemetery. People were very unhappy with the conditions of Back Creek so many graves were moved from Back Creek to Park Cemetery. Another wave of removals occurred when the cemetery was abandoned by the church and given to the township. At this time the township used Back Creek to bury their indigent poor. If you feel your relative was buried or should have been buried in Back Creek Cemetery and you don't find them on any list for this cemetery check the other cemeteries, especially the Park Cemetery for them. They may have been moved. This cemetery was read by Rick and Karen Marshall and Karen's sister, Janet Eastburn. They have done a fantastic job and we have them to thank for such a wonderful job. It was an every name read. There are 4 piles of stones, one is piled on a rotted log on the south center edge of the cemetery and the other 3 piles are under 3 pine trees at the southwest corner of the cemetery. There are many stones down and many were totally illegible. Civil War veterans information was obtained from "Indiana Quakers Confront the Civil War", and a book on Back Creek Burial Records by Ralph Kirkpatrick. * No stone found as of Oct. 27, 2002 Achor, Eunice wife of Joseph Achor died Apr. 24, 1899 aged 76y.10m.21d. Her name was Eliza Bull Seale and she was married to my GGGrandfather, John Seale. Her father's name was John Jasper Bull b. England 1799, her mother's name was Elizabeth Butcher Bull b.England 1797. She was the first of three wives of John Seale. The Bulls came here in 1849 and were followed by John Seale in 1850, as he loved their daughter Eliza. She died in childbirth, as did the infant, in 1855, not 1875. John Seale then married Amy Davidson Seale in 1859, and after her death, married Asenith Rich Seale in 1875.
