Jess Harper KNOWLES. Mabel POWHATAN KNOWLES was my husband's paternal grandmother. I would greatly appreciate information relating to Ada Madeline KINDER & Henry William POWHATAN. It is possible that Ada's parents were Abram KINDER & Lucinda (unk) who were censused in 1850 in Connorsville, Fayette, IN --- Abram, 50, b VA, and Lucinda, 38, b KY, w/ children John, 16, laborer, b IN; Nancy, 12, b IN; Henry, 9, b IN; Lydia, 7, b IN; Margaret, 5, b IN; Lutitia, 3, b IN; & Ephraim, 1, b IN. Adaline was then b 1852. By 1860, Abram KINDER had presumably died. The widow & children were censused 1860 & 1870 continuing in Fayette Co., IN, intermingling w/ the PIPER families, presumably relatives of Lucinda. Contrarily, one researcher believes Madeline KINDER POWHATAN m1 (unk) KINDER & had one son, James Madison KINDER in 1852. James Madison later lived in Mt. View, Howell, MO, & later in Lincoln Co., OK. As for H. W. POWHATAN, he & his first family were 1870 censused at P.O. Grandview, Spencer, IN: POWHATAN, Henry W., 48, $1000 RE, $300 PP, b ME; Mary J.a, 42, b OH; Lewis C., 13, b OH. By 1880, H. W. was widowed & living w/ his son's family in Clay Twp., Spencer, IN: POWHATAN, Lewis, 23, farmer, b IN*; wife Cordie, 21, b IN; infant son, 1 mo., b IN; father William, 58, farm laborer, b IN*. (*On all other records, Lewis gave OH as his birth state, & his father gave Maine for himsel.) By 1900, he & his second family were censused in Mt. View, Howell, MO. I would be grateful for ANY information about the illusive Henry William POWHATAN & his wives. What was his given surname? --- all descendants report POWHATAN was NOT his original name but rather something he later chose sometime before the Civil War. He was, by all research results, a bit of a fraud in many ways, I have discovered. What was 1st wife Mary J.'s maiden name, parents, siblings, birth info, where married? Was second wife Ada Madeline's maiden name KINDER, or did she first marry an (unk) KINDER? If the latter, what was her maiden name? WHERE did she & POWHATAN marry? I would be most interested in thoughts from anyone researching any of these individuals, & would, of course, be glad to share all that I have accumulated. DATE: SEP 08 1998 KINDER / POWHATANJust to reiterate the 3 main points of my original query: (1) Henry William POWHATAN sometimes reversed his given names to William Henry, but he always used the initials H. W. in that order. b. 22 Mar 1822-32, Augusta, Kennebec, ME d. 4 Feb 1904, Mt. View, Howell, MO m1.Mary J. (unk), bef. 1856, place unk. b. KY or OH d. ca. 1873-80, Spencer Co., IN bd.Mt. Perhaps they were also bd. @ Mt. Moriah Cem.??? Variously listed her birth as OH & KY. (3) Ada Madeline "Adaline, Addie" KINDER Was her maiden name KINDER or did she first marry an (unk) KINDER? Was her father Abram KINDER, b. ca. 1800 VA, d. bef. 1860 Fayette Co., IN? Was her mother Lucinda (unk) KINDER, b. ca. 1812 KY, d. aft. 1870 poss. Fayette Co., IN? Was Addie the mother of James Madison KINDER, b. 1852 IN? Listed as b. in White River, IN --- I cannot find this location, but have found the following possibilities: (1) White River Twp., Gibson Co., IN; (2) White River Twp., Hamilton Co., IN; (3) White River Twp., Johnson Co., IN; (4) White River Twp., Randolph Co., IN; & (5) the area of the Whitewater River that runs north-south through th center of Fayette Co., IN, the poss. birth home of Addie KINDER POWHATAN. Any thoughts, Judy? [MY NOTE: White River, IN was just a couple miles sse of Mt Carmel, Gibson Co, IN/jm] Thanks for your interest. All the best, Marcia. Mr. GILLIHAN was at work on the WPA project on Coffee Creek, when the death occurred. Mr. GILLIHAN is held in high esteem by his associates and a sizable fund which his many friends and co-workers collected was presented to him. Funeral services were held at the Short Undertaking Parlors in Mt. Carmel, after which the body was taken to the Maumee Cemetery near Johnsonville, Ind. for burial. Tombstones in the Maumee Cemetery read as follows: Minnie B. Gillihan wife of Jos. S. 1899 - 1936 Joseph P. Gillihan Aug 25, 1930 [Jos. S. Best wishes, Nola DATE: AUG 17 1998 COCKRELL / GARDNER / Gibson Co: Research Tips/Library Help / HOWELL / KYLER / McNICHOLL / RICKS / SHERWOOD / STONEMETZ / WEATHERHOLD / WEATHERHOLTI am looking for information on Marlin/Marley/Martin COCKRELL and his wife, Mary STONEMETZ. They were married in 1805 in Alexandria Va - we know she had lived in Chester, Pa, Berley (West) Virginia, Cincinatti, Ohio and Perry Co Tn. Martin filed for land in Tobin Twp in 1819. He died abt 1835. I understand he has an estate in Book A pg 14 which I need information from. Mary remarried in 1843 to John WEATHERHOLT. Her parents, Casper STONEMETZ and Ann HOWELL, also came to Perry County and they are buried in Conners Cemetery. David, my husbands gr-gr grandfather, is buried in Simon Cemetery. The STONEMETZ intermarried with many early Perry Co families - KYLER, RICKS, GARDNER, SHERWOOD, WEATHERHOLD, McNICHOLL. I also need copy of marriage license for David COCKRELL and Sarah MILLER 2/8/1838. Does anyone know of a person who can check estate and obtain copy of marriage license. I saw a cemetery book in library in Kansas City. I would like to purchase this book if it is available. I don't recall what cemetery book. It just had the Perry Co families in it. I copied a lot but have found more families since doing this. What books and where can they be purchased. I seldom get to go to a good library, so must do with what I can purchase and what I can find on net. I added abt 4 generations to the COCKRELL and STONEMETZ family in last 6 weeks. Found an excellant book so very well documented. I have been searching for 40 years. I wrote to court- house for the information I was wanting. Thank you [MY REPLY TO HER: When persons send me this info (book names, authors' names, prices, where to order, etc) I usually put it under the Gibson CO index area. I also try to put this info in lookups if there is some person who does lookups on books. Also check out the miscellaneous area -- sometimes I put things there that comes via letters (snail mail). If you can't find a book still for sale or in your local area, don't dispair because many many persons live in areas that has very little in their libraries but if you use the following 3 methods you may be able to find things that are available for interlibrary loan or you can rent for a few dollars -- and it may amaze you what is there that can come to YOU or to the library near you. 1) Ask the library to use their database search of books in their system for Gibson Co IN and to print this out showing the nearest location of these books (be sure you tell them you want ALL things including microfiche and microfilm) and which ones can be interlibrary loaned and which are only research copies. What she will give you is a list showing the name, the call number, author's name, and brief description of the book. It will show things like this too: let's say you live in San Antonio, Texas -- it may say the book is located at the McCreless branch location in SA, but another book might show nearest location is the Seguin, TX main library. It might say that the one at McCreless is reference only (which means you need to go there to see it) but the Seguin, TX one can be interlibrary borrowed -- so you ask your library to borrow it for you. (be sure and check price -- some do this for free or just for postage, and others add extra $2 to $7 perbook -- order only what you can afford). Also remember that most of the interlibrary borrowed ones can ONLY be used inside the library, but they will keep the book for x number of days (anywhere from 3 days to 30 days) so you can hop over there during that period to view it. The books/fiche/films may be required to be viewed only in the library itself. 2) At the local college/university to do the same type of database search of books (again Gibson Co IN) -- the colleges and universities are on a completely DIFFERENT database and so you will get a different list -- where the public library doesn't have the book, the univeristy MIGHT have it. Most of the colleges and universities allow outsiders to use the books there in the library, but some will charge you a $2 to $20 year fee to get a card allowing you access to the library -- but most don't. Now some will charge this card fee so you can CHECK OUT the books. Again they have interlibrary loans. Again, the books and fiche / films may be required to be viewed only in the library itself. 3) Go to the local LDS (Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) libraries and see what they have in their card catalogue -- just look up Indiana then Gibson Co -- you might be amazed what they have in libraries even as far south as Texas, as far west as Washignton state/California, as far east as Fla and Maine, etc. What one LDS library has the other may not have -- each holding of these LDS libraries depends on what they have ordered for their books, and what the customers have rented. (when a customer rents a fiche it stays "forever" in the library for others to see, when a customer rents a film it stays there for 30 days or until they stop renewing -- they usually have a book or method so you can see what others have currently in the library -- you can then view these (of course the customer who rented it has first priority should they come in while you are viewing it, etc). Also ask them for a list of the books and stuff for Perry Co, IN that are on fiche/films that you can rent. The rental goes from $2 to around $9 a roll for 30 days rental. (if you decide you would want to buy that roll of film or fiche you need to get the AGLL ones which you save the receipts and once you have renewed it enough then it becomes your personal and can be taken home -- otherwise just use the LDS films/fiche. It is this method I have been able to get lots of the Gibson Co, IN and other county census films -- sort of like an installment way of purchasing these as I couldn't afford to buy outright (run between $14 and $20 a roll). COMMENT: Many persons are very hesitant about using or going to the LDS libraries because it is a church not of their own religion -- do not be afraid because every one I have ever been to has been a very professional library environment and I have NEVER even been approached about their religion much less even preached to, etc. Most of these libraries are in separate buildings or a separate section of the church too -- usually with entrances to the outside directly into the library/research area. I have had some wonderful luck with these libraries. Although it "appears" that they don't have much (very few books) they actually have so much it is mind-boggling -- most of their resources are "hidden away" via the computer, microfilms and microfiche. Ask someone to give you a tour and ask when you have a problem. They are always very helpful whether you are a new visitor to the library or an old user of the library. Hope some of the above will get you some info brought closer to your home and the libraries there. Since I don't know where in the world (literally) you live I have no idea what resources you have in that location -- but the above 3 methods seems to work quite well (including for people overseas). BEASLEY / BERGER / BOLIN / INGLE / SWARTZHello, I would like to post a Query for: William Frederick INGLE, born Feb 7, 1830, died June 18, 1903. William married Catherine who was born June 1835. Both are buried in King Cemetary in Birdseye, Indiana. Birdseye must be in Perry or Dubois county. Birdseye is just off old 64 up around Dubois (town). Up around Huntingburg. William F. INGLE served in the Civil War with Company "K' of the 38th Indiana Infanty. I was born in Princeton, and went to school in Francisco. Do you know where that is? By the way, have a buntch of stuff on BEASLEYs and SWARTZ's. Also had an uncle who was a BOLIN. He had a brother named (?) "Coon". Have no idea about where he came from or his father or Mother. "Coon" is not his name, but a nickname. Also, I had uncles that worked in the mines. In fact I lived about 1/2 mile from the mine for a few years. Dad worked on the Southern R.R. there at Princeton. Yes, my uncle's name was Frank Sidney BOLIN. He married Bessie Bell SWARTZ. Uncle Frank (I believe) also worked in the coal mines for awhile. Bessie was born Aug 14, 1896. Don't know Frank's age.....Really know nothing about his family. Kinda of a loner. They had no children, except they adopted a boy (Elmer Berger). He (Elmer) is still alive in Lousiana. Maybe my Aunt knows something. Will try to find out. Got a cousin in Florida who is into this genealogy thing, and will forward this to him. His name is Daniel Lockwood. Put query in Perry and Gibson pages. Maybe someone will see my name and help me out. If get more, will write. Jim Ingle DATE: JUL 31 1998
BERGER / BOLINJudy: I told you that I would contact Elaine Beasley who lived in Harrison MI and she should know something about Frank BOLIN. Well, it seems she has moved and Jim Ingle's sister said that she is moving to FL but we have no address. Elaine's sister, Mary Lou m. Elmer BERGER so she would know Elmer's address in Louisana. Elmer was a side gunner on a B-47 during WW2. He was shot through the leg on a mission over Germany. He stuffed his shirt in the wound and when they landed the shirt had frozen to his leg. The Dr's weren't very happy. Elmer was never adopted by Frank and Bess, otherwise his name would be BOLIN. My sister Elizabeth CATO would know more about the BOLINs than either Jim or I. She has done a lot of genealogy but is not on line. Her address is: Elizabeth Cato 1291 Williar Ave. Corydon IN 47112 812-738-3976 Dan DATE: JUL 31 1998
FRANCISCO COAL MINES / GIBSON CO: "The History of Francisco" / GIBSON CO: FRANCISCO COAL MINES REMEMBERED / SANDAGE[NOTE: I asked Dan Lockwood and Jim Ingle if they would go on a memory-jaunt and tell me some little facts of things about Francisco and the coal mines. Here is one of Dan's treks "down memory lane". I never lived in the county but knew my father and grandfather both worked in these mines and wanted to get an idea of what the area was like, etc. I have some photos of mine cavein back in 1920's and hope to eventually put these online. I hope you enjoy this rememberance too -- I know I certainly did. I think things like this helps fill out who are ancestors were, and what they had to deal with, etc. My thanks to Dan, Jim, and everyone who goes on these "memory lane" excursions, shares these with us, and takes us along on the "ride"./jmurphy] The old coal mine didn't have a name it was just called, "The # 2 Mine". Or if it also had a name I don't know what it was. Did you know there was another mine in Francisco? It was located on the road that is on the street that the Baptist Church was located. It was about a half mile or so down that street located back of the Wallace Feed Factory. Dave and I ran across the shaft accidently one day. We asked our dad and he said that the mine didn't last long for some reason. I don't know if they ever got coal out of there but nothing was there but the shaft. I think it was called , "Mine # 1." I forgot to mention that my sister said that she rememberd a SANDAGE family living in or near Francisco. In 1990 I received a lettter from the Francisco Alumni Association stating that they were going to write a book, "The History of Francisco." They asked if I would like to contribute which I did. In fact I still have a copy of what I sent. I still haven't heard if the book was written or even if it is in the process. I have asked Lyle Young, a person I graduated with from H.S., and he doesn't seem to know either. Yesterday I got an e-mail from Joyce Truitt who lives in Evansville and she just happened to mention that her grandfather Glenn Sandage had been killed in a mine in 1943. So there must have been some casualities in the # 2 mine of that year unless there were 2 explosions the same year. My sister called today and told me and said that the coal mine that blew up was # 1 and not # 2. All my life I thought it was # 2. She also thought it was ca. 1923 or 24. The Princeton newspaper is on film back to 1845, so maybe the best thing to do is to check it and see exactly what did happern. Dan DATE JUL 31 1998

HUGHESThanks for the tip. I located the death certificates for each in the Gibson County Health Department. Now I am trying for find out more about my great grandfather. His name was Tabla HUGHES. I only know that he was in the Union Army during the Civil War. Could you tell me where I might be able to find out which command he served under. I assume it was under General Sherman since he named my grandfather after him and thus began a long line of Sherman's in our family. Thanks, Steve Hughes Yeled8253@aol.com DATE: JUL 31 1998

BLACK / HOUSER / KINDERI thought you might be interested in hearing briefly about a KINDER connection I have by marriage to a man named Joseph R. KINDER from Ayrshire in Pike County, IN. First of all, do you know if you are related to this man? He was born about 1838 in Pike County. His occupation was as a coal miner. On March 2, 1890 he moved to Vincennes in Knox County, IN where he married (briefly) my g.g.g. grandmother, named Lovina (Lavina) _____ HOUSER BLACK. They were married in Knox County on November 14, 1890 and by July 27, 1891 HE had already filed for a divorce in Knox County Circuit (District) Court. From the divorce record, it appears that Lovina (or sometimes Lavina) was a difficult woman. I am sending this email in hopes of finding out more information about this ggg grandmother of mine. I am not certain of her maiden name, but Joseph R. KINDER was her third (3rd) husband. Her first husband was named Peter HOUSER and they had one child together, Caroline (Carrie) A. HOUSER. Lovina divorced him in St. Joseph County, MI in 1873 and then moved to Marion Co, IL and married that same year to a man named Richard C. BLACK. They had no kids and they moved to Vincennes in the 1870's. He later died in 1888. She then married Joseph and they divorced after which she took back her name of Lovina BLACK. I show her living in Vincennes, IN up until 1908 or 1909 and lose her after that. She was born in NY approx. 1851. I cannot find any death certificate or tombstone in Knox County. I really hope that you are somehow connected to this Joseph KINDER? I would like to know what happened to him and where he is buried and if he had any other family? Maybe there is some information somewhere about Lovina BLACK laying around ? I've really hit a dead-end on this one as you can tell by the depth of my email here. I would appreciate any info you may have for me. Many, many thanks for your help. Oh, and as a side note, I notice that you live in Fairborn. I myself was born in Dayton and raised on the North and West sides, namely Trotwood and Brookville area. I am a 1983 graduate of Brookville High School. Truly a small world isn't it? Looking forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience. Christian Iversen 1520 Helmo Avenue N Oakdale, MN 55128-5528 email: chiversen@aol.com DATE JUL 17 1998

I have sent the webmaster an update which should be added fairly soon. http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/r/y/Connie-C-Bryant/GENE7-0001.html If you happen to know anything about descendants of Luther B. KIMBALL and Violet Jane BRYANT COCKRUM I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks for the Gibson Co., IN page, it has lots of good information. [My note: I wrote him back and told him I would be more than welcome to put these gedcoms on the page; but, he might want to make a webpage where viewers can see the info immediately instead of having to download a gedcom and mess with trying to upload it to their program, etc. (this would have been my preference too) I suggested the http://www.my-ged.com as a good place to do this and he wrote back saying that he will do this and let us know the link address when it is there./jm] DATE: JUL 19 1998

GIBSON CO: ResearchSubject: Fort Branch. Dear Judith, About a month ago I came to your beatiful state for the second time to do research on my SMITH family. I found the place they were buried . A very nice cemetery in Fort Branch, In. Everyone in this small town was very nice and friendly . Very sadly I must say that the Libriaran was so rude I couldn't belive it . I have traveled in many states doing research and have never had this happen before . Most of the people are so nice and helpful. Next time I will go back to Princeton to the Gibson Co. Historial So. where I was treated with kindness. Thanks so much. gwyn@midwest.net [MY NOTE: Occasionally we encounter persons who do not want to help us in our research pursuits, or who are just plain rude. I put this letter here to let you know that you may encounter things such as this, and if the persons who are working in the Ft Branch library read these queries -- then I hope that this message shows that someone in their library made a REALLY BAD IMPRESSION on an out-of-state visitor. On the other hand ... it is a two-way street. Many of the persons working in the libraries, research areas, courthouses, etc. have to put up with visitors to their establishments who are also very rude and crude. Let's all be on our best when we use the facilities and then maybe some of the librarians and county/city/state workers will treat us the same. (I am NOT saying that Gwyn was a bad customer and was treated accordingly -- this message here is just a simple reminder for ALL OF US (myself included) to be the best we can be, whether we are the researcher or the employee/volunteer)./jm] DATE: JUL 10 1998

LUCASHello, I am interested in obtaining info from Montgomery Township or Princeton, IN on the family of Volney LUCAS. He was listed in 1860 Census online. You are doing a great job with this web site by the way! Is there anyone there like at your Genealogy Society that does research? I would like to find this mans Death and marriage and his son Daniel Elsworth LUCAS' birth data. I know when Daniel was born I just need some secondary documents (2 more) that site the birth date. I have Daniel's obit which gives the place of birth as Princeton, IN and I find the census to say his father was living in Montgomery Twp. Daniel's first wife was Ethel and I think she died in IL in 1903 ish. His second wife was Ellen (according to census) I found her death in 1955, his death was 1963 (99 yrs old). I would pay someone for research if there is anyone that will produce good searches. I don't know my way around your county as I am in Michigan and just learned of this man last week on Thursday, before that I had no reason to know about Gibson County. Have been thru there on way to Vincennes and Evansville though. I live in Berrien County MI and have the MIUSGENWEB site there, Hi! to a fellow USGENWEB Volunteer. Please let me know if you know of anyone that will search for the members of the family of Volney LUCAS for 1860 Census Montgomery Twp. (is this near Princeton?) and the birth data for son Daniel.
