BOLIN / BOLLING / JEFFERSON

The BOLIN family you seek is descended from Thomas BOLIN and his wife Mary. Thomas' Revolutionary war pension record is on file in Perry County, IN. Thos. moved from Wilkes Co, NC to Hardin Co, KY then Hancock Co & died in Troy Twp., Perry, IN. Using the federal census you should be able to trace this line rather easily. It was also compiled by Daniel Lynn BOLIN, dec'd, of Breckinridge, KY. His books are in the Breckinridge/Hawesville KY libraries. It is my personal belief that Thomas BOLIN may be the son of Col. John BOLLING & Mary JEFFERSON, sister to Pres. Thomas JEFFERSON, though I have not been able to prove it. If this is the case, Thomas would be a descendant of Pocahontas/Metaoka/Rebecca. It kind of got to me after a while so I dropped the search about a yr. or so ago. However, the birth date Thomas gave for himself in his Revolutionary War Pension Statement appears to be a merging of the christening & birth dates for two children of John & Mary BOLLING; Thomas (who has never been located as an adult) and Jane BOLLING. It is important to take note that in the NC Revolutionary Records Thomas' last name is spelled BOLLING.

First of all, you have a wonderful site at www.my-ged.com/kinder/. My wife and research department spent a week wandering southern Indiana, and we think she found some good stuff, when we get it organized. From several months ago it looks like I owe you an answer on where her KINDER roots come from. Alsie KINDER shows up in generation 5. The David in generation 2 I think is sibling of Rebecca KINDER BOLIN that you mentioned. I have 3 wives for David. A lot of the stuff that my wife found is from the Booneville Library, and was prepared by Opal B. PHILLIPS in 1990. Do you have any idea how much of this is trustworthy? I compared her Thomas BOLIN to your on line records, and found that she found 6 kids including a Henry Curtis born ca 1840 died before 1850 census. buried Perry County. She, in another area that we have touched on, I think has Peter I KINDER with three wives. She lists the second as Levina, third as Dolly ---no last names. One of the interesting findings is "The Gentry Family in America, 1676 to 1909" written by Richard GENTRY. It suggests that all the GENTRY of Indiana Settled in Warrick and Spencer Co. and Ohio Co. KY are the descendents of the 8 sons of Samuel that moved from North Carolina. Other names they cover are CLAIBORNE, HARRIS, SHARP, HAWKINS, ROBINSON, SMITH, WYATT, FULKERSON, BUTLER, BUSH, BLYTHE, PABODY, NOBLE, HAGGARD and TINDALL. A newspaper article claims that there were 960 GENTRY voters in Warrick Co. I think you know of a few GENTRY links to your tree, I suspect that this book could fill it out better. My inclination is to give Higinson Book Company the $52 they want for a copy. We also got some FERGUSON info, which is not as well laid out it is mostly trees devoid of dates. Have been to the library in Princeton a few times (I forget her name at this time, but a real helpful lady works there). It's an 8 hour drive so I cannot make it down there too often. Hello, I am requesting help with the possibility of readings having been taken at the MORRISON CEMETERY in Patoka Township. My great-grandfather Barnett MORRISON (b.6 April 1827, d. 2 Oct 1899) is from the Princeton, Indiana area. He was married twice, both marriages having taken place (I think) in Gibson County. The first was to Isaphena LATHOM 2 Nov 1859, and the second to Lydia Elizabeth SPENCER 18 Feb 1877. Each marriage produced a number of children. I also do not know Barnett's parents names. Is there a publication which might have more about the Morrison Cemetery. Thank you for your response and your help. CMorri2900@aol.com (Carlene Morrison)

PRINCETON PUBLIC LIBRARY / WILLARD LIBRARY / THE HAMPTON INN / THE GUEST INN

It might be nice to add a blurb with the address/phone of the Princeton Library and maybe the Willard Library in Evansville. Suggest that they call ahead for hours to the Princeton Library. Even though their sign on the door said the genealogy room was open on Saturday, they wouldn't open it because there was no one to staff it. It appears it will be closed Saturdays for quite a while. Luckily, the Willlard Library was open so this was an excellent backup plan. PRINCETON PUBLIC LIBRARY 130 S. Hart Princeton, IN 812-385-4464 It's just south of the downtown square. For Hours, I would call first. The genealogy room is on the lower floor and is not open if there's not staff to man it. At the moment, it's only open M-F. WILLARD LIBRARY 21 First Avenue Evansville IN 47710 812-425-4309 Email lmartin@evansville.net (the first letter is an "el" or "L") Hours as of 5/98: Tues 9-8 W-F 9-5:30 Sat 9-5 Sun 1-5 I haven't gotten to visit the Princeton Library yet but the Willard library has a very nice setup and takes up the entire 3rd level of the building (very old building). Also, a person that visited a year or more ago, told me there were no hotels in Gibson Co. at all but 2 new ones have opened up in the last 6-9 months: THE HAMPTON INN and THE GUEST INN. Both are in Princeton off of Indiana 41. Both are new and nice. There are some good restaurants close by. They're only 5 minutes from the library, too. Hope this helps! Delanie Alcorn-Jones

COX / KINDER / SOUTHERS

I am trying to locate information on a William KINDER. Unfortunately, my information is rather sketchy, but I will give you what I have in hopes that you may be able to help me, or at least provide some leads. My ggrandmother was named Deffie KINDER. In 1892 she married Ethel SOUTHERS. On the marriage record, her parents are listed as William KINDER and Jane COX. I have tried to find information on William KINDER, but without much success. I have found two IGI records on William. One is for 1873 showing that he married Jane COX in 1873 in Martin County, IN. The other is listed as miscellaneous and is dated 1844. It is also for Martin County. I know that you do research for Perry County, but you are the first reseacher I have found with a link to the name KINDER. As such, I am hopeful you may have some information on William. Thank you. Rich Southers

HODGES / LASLEY / LESLEY / LESLIE

Subject: Re: Lasley, Leslie, Lesley My grandfather was Martin LASLEY / LASLIE. My g-grandfather was William LESLIE married to Hannah HODGES, My gg-grandfather was Israel. William was the son of Israel and William was my great-grandfather. My grandfather Martin LASLEY, married my grandmother Lillia Malinda MARTIN Dec. 31, 1896. On the marrige information, it listed the marriage as a second marriage for Martin. Martin LASLEY died when my father was 13 and my grandmother died when I was 16 so don't have much info. Both of my parents are deceased and all of my fathers brothers and sister are deceased. So I have to do a lot of piecing.

Have found Israel LASLEY. He started out in Warrick county. Ran a store in Folsomville. Martin LASLEY / LASLIE listed his home as Ft. Branch on his marriage record to my grandmother. I would be interested in any information you have on the LASLEY / LESLIEs in Gibson County. My family still lives there. My brother Ernie Lasley is also doing Geneology. He lives in Owensville, but I'm not sure which county it is in.

Thanks for any help. Judy (Lasley) Cundiff

HOLFELNER / KIESEL

Judith...I'm enclosing my ged file with this post; also a pedigree chart of myself, and another handwitten sheet from Minnie. (this would be her brothers and sisters. Lawrence is her husband and Phyllis HOLFELNER is a granddaughter of hers. From the pedigree chart you will see that Matthew Kiesel is my G-grandfather and Magdalena is his first wife (he had two others). They had 8 children I believe, so if you run across any more just jot them down...maybe they are related somehow. I have their names in the file. I understand about nameing children after the grandparents....notice ....3 greatsgrandfather.. Getting a little sleepy...planing a hard day at work; Gary Kiesel.ged Judith1.jpg Judith2.jpg

BANKERT / KIESEL

The reason for the question if there was a St. James, IN is because I was told from my father that she was born there, and I could not find it on the map. Also a cousin of mine said that she was born elsewhere; course I would take my dads word first but he at times have made mistakes like we all do. Any way her birthdate was 8/29/1886 but she died in Evansville 2/1970. Her name is Minnie BANKERT KIESEL. What I'm looking for is her ancestors. Her dad, John Bankert, was born 10/4/1856 and d 8/8/1894. I have nothing on her mother; but I do have a first name of Lena that is mention through hearsay. Since there was a populated place named St. James, there has to be a cemetery near by. Maybe I can find someone that could help on that idea; maybe there are some caretakers; I don't know. I found out the vital records did not start until 1882, so my search there may be limited. If you have any ideas I sure would like to hear of them, at the present I'm not able to take off and travel for an hobby as this; but maybe in the future. Looking for the family of BANKERT, John- B 1856 d 1894 Any info would be helpful. Tks Gary

BANKERT / BENKERT / EBERHARD / ECKART / ECKHART / ECKHURD / ECKLURD / FICHE / HERTZMAN / KIESEL / MICROFILM / MICROFICHE / REINHARDT / RENKERT / VANDERBURGH BIRTH, DEATH, MARRIAGE RECORDS

Subject: Re: St. James, IN [MY NOTE: He queried whether or not there was a St. James in Gibson Co, IN possibly near Haubstaudt -- I said there was one and gave exact coordinates (found in the towns/cities of this webpage) and showed that it was southwest of Haubstaudt, IN right near the Vanderburgh county line and possibly if they were living in the country the birth could be recorded in that county or if buried the cemetery could also be in that county too/jm] I notice from the time I receive your post it was 1am this morning. You're just like me...sometimes I'm up that late; not last night but quite offen. Well LADY!!! You hit it. I'm almost ready to go to church; and I'm for sure am going to say a prayer for you and to Our Lord for this wonderful find. Through my own fault I should have sent you this attachment which you are about to receive. ( I hope your e-mail browser accepts attachments). This is a copy of Minnie handwriting showing dates of her reliatives. Just as you mention, I realize its hard to read others handwriting. Plus poor Minnie didn't have much schooling, for the spelling isn't correct. Just in case you can not receive attachments, her writing reads: Grandma ECKART died 23 June 1896 Grandma BANKERT died Oct. 29, 1900 Lena BANKERT died 7 Jan 1900 and was born July 22 1858 John BANKERT 4 Oct 1856 and died 8 Aug 1894 Married 21 Sept. 1880 Also she has written: Anton HERTZMAN died 18 Sept 1899 ( this person I can not place anywhere) Let me know about the attachments, weather or not you are able to receive them. So...now that I have these dates; do I now write to the health dept for the records. If I understand correctly, the records will also show more info such as parents etc. And the numbers that you listed are they the numbers were they are located. ( such as H-33 16) [H stands for County Health Dept, vol 33, page 16/jm] Here is a response I received from the library in Evansville: [QUOTE] Dear Gary: Since I do not know how much research you have done, I'll quote a few basic facts about Vanderburgh County and Indiana, and we'll go from there. BIRTH and DEATH records did not officially start until 1882. The W.P.A. did an index for these records 1882-1920. Although we have the index which tells the book and page number of the record, copies of the records themselves must come from the heath department. The W.P.A. also did an index for the MARRIAGES, 1846-1920. As Vanderburgh Co. was officially established in 1818, we have indexed marriages back that far, and we have indexed those records forward from 1921-1945. There is a state-wide index that runs 1958-1965. We have all marriages on microfilm 1818-1979 and copies can be made. One of the local funeral home directors has prepared an alphabetical newspaper abstract of the deaths 1921-1993. This gives such info. as age, date of death, cause, funeral home, cemetery, and survivors. [END QUOTE] After this info you gave me I went back to your Gibson county page and found a Valentine ECKHART married a Margaret REINHARDT on 4/4/1844. Of course this don't tell me anything other than the last name is the same (Eckhart). But it is possible it is a related person. I went to the local LDS center today and tried my luck there...NONE. Oh! by the way; I live in Memphis Tn. The main library here in town has the 1900 census microfilms on each county in Indiana; although I could not find the one for Gibson county. Maybe someone had it check out. I was told that the 1890 census were burned and not available. True??? What is/are fiche ?? I never heard of that term. I need to run for now for its getting late... Gary ---------- [MY RESPONSE TO HIS MESSAGE : note that I NORMALLY Do NOT Do LOOKUPS or RESEARCH for others but I was transcribing some fiche that evening, so I did look for his surnames at the time I was doing other transcribing for the webpages. These transcriptions from the microfiche will all eventually be in the births, deaths, marriages, marriage supplement and other sections of the webpage for all to see (all surnames there). I had written the following to him in previous messages/jm: Fiche are the microfilms that are on little squares of negatives and they go into a reader between two pieces of glass -- think they are 4x6" but may be wrong there. Yes, 1882 is what I have for date beginnings on some county records. 1890 some of the stuff did burn and unsure if Gibson Co's census' were in this group or not -- not all states did and some were recreated. Remember as you read the info I am sending that these are from the fiche that WPA did when they did their compiling -- it was typed up after being read and because so much of this is hard to read many times the person reading did the "best" they could. Also there would be typos because many of these persons were not secretaries and just persons they paid to do this work. Same with the readings -- they were WPA persons who were not professional readers/typists of these types of script. Some of the books are extrememly bad condition and very faint writing too or writing from other pages would smear or come through the back -- this is all part of the reason I was 'scouring' the fiche trying to find anything that would sound like or the researcher may have picked up as another letter (for instance when I do readings I find R, B, F, and sometimes M's all look the same; same with e, o, u, i's. I did NOT find her YET -- but since you do have an LDS library see if you can't rent the microfilm of the actual birth books -- the one you want would be the County Health Dept record of Births and would be Volume 2, and should be between the pages of 104 and 114 (I got this by glancing at an Aug 5, 1886 date was on page 104 and a Nov 1886 date was on page 114). Minnie's birth MIGHT be in the fiche (I didn't check the F's yet) I have but so far not in the other places I have glanced (since may have been read different from what it actually was, and then typed up accordingly. It may be in a different area of the fiche because of the different spelling). By getting the actual copies of the birth books you can then see if you find it -- would be easier than the fiche because would be by birth date (unless it was an addendum in a later book) and these records usualy are not by alphabet like this fiche is. Costs between 2 and $7 I think to rent for a month. If you order the FICHE the LDS library gets to keep it in their stock forever, while the ROLLS of microfilm have to be returned after 30 days. Do NOT get the fiche F3931 & F3932 as these are the alphabetic ones by WPA and ones I used in trying to locate her birth (to no avail so far) -- get the actual birth book films. Here goes with what I have been able to find (never did find Minnie marrying to a KIESEL and you didn't mention her husband's name -- I checked in both fiche (marriage to 1920 and the marriage supplement). (H is county health dept book, first number is volume, second is page) From deaths (you already had John's date of death but didn't know if you had age and place of death): Bankert, John m w 38 d Aug 3, 1894 W.S.Gibson Co H-33 16 Bankert, Magdelena 42 Feb 7, 1900 Warrenton H-34 1 Bankert, Mary 81 Oct 29, 1910 Johnson tp H-39 30 From marriages -- note that there was a John who married a Lena: Bankert, John Lena Eckhart marr Sep 21, 1880 6 8 Benkert, Josephine John Eberhard Aug 25, 1874 (this last I copied because often brothers and sister married and I have seen Eckhart and Eberhard interchanged when people copied them) (I glanced to see if I could find a Lena Eckhart or Lena Bankert remarrying after John's death -- nothing) Births: Renkert, Edward John Lura Ecklurd m w b Jul 10, 1884 H2-19 (now this above appears at first sight NOT yours but look again -- R and B's often mistaken for one another; father John; u's and r's often mistaken for e's and n's and same with the lurd/hard/hurd/hart being interchangeable and Ecklurd/Eckhurd/Eckhart -- I think this Edward is an older brother of Minnie's. I could not find any other Ecklurd or Lura's who were married to any Renkert persons and for that matter any other Renkert in the county. At this time this is all I have been able to find -- not much but if Lena ECKHART who married John (date of marriage would be about right if she was born in 1886) then it is at least a "lead" to the Lena you have been seeking as well as the marriage date. My best, Judy M.

CARTRIGHT / CUTRIGHT / TWEEDLE

In searching for relitives in my family I found that the names that I was looking for were misspelled and was wondering if you could tell me the source of the information so that I might check and see if the original marriage license had the same spelling. I know these things happen and if the name is spelled this way on all the documents it will make my job of tracing our family much easier. The name is "John CARTRIGHT married to Sarah TWEEDLE" I know this is my great, great, great, grandfather because of Sarah TWEEDLE. The only difference is that our name is now spelled CUTRIGHT and we have been trying to get past a point in our search for years. This could be the answer. If you could tell me the source of information this marriage license came from it would be of great help. [MY REPLY: this was from a microfiche of the wpa readings that was typed up and put into book form and is located in Indiana State Library - was Cartright in this book and also shows as same on online marriage searching for Indiana marriages/jm] Thank you Les Cutright

The OLIVER family was my mothers clan. William Arthur, the father, was married to Maude. My mother, Fern Marie, was born to William Arthur OLIVER and Maude on June 30, 1913. This blessed event supposedly took place in Oakland City. Other issue to William and Maude included Hazel, Thelma, Flo, Dimple, and Wayne. I am not sure if these issue were born in Oakland City.
