Rev. David M.
Brookman, 73 passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Linda E. White Hospice
House in Evansville. He was born in Wellsville, OH on March 18, 1944 to David Trenle and Mary Violetta
(MacDonald) Brookman.
David served in a
variety of positions within the Presbyterian Church throughout his career until
his retirement in 2007 as the Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in
Princeton. Prior to that, he served as a Hospice Chaplain in Wheeling, WV and
as a Pastor at the Coalbrook Presbyterian Church in Neffs, OH. He also worked as a Campus Minister at Hastings
College in Hastings, NE, Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI and
Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS. His first call was to the First
Presbyterian Church in Powhatan Point, OH. David published several books,
articles, and gave presentations on a variety of topics related to spirituality
and religion. David served on several non-profit boards, taught college level
courses on environmental ethics, philosophy, and religion, and pursued
continuing education in counseling and spiritual direction. In retirement, he
was active in several groups dedicated to promoting interfaith dialogue, social
justice, and care for the environment.
David received his
Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the College of Wooster in Wooster,
OH. He completed his Masters of Divinity degree, graduating Magna Cum Laude
from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and a Master of Arts Degree in History of
Religions, from the Hartford Seminary Foundation. He then received his Ph.D. in
Religious Studies from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
David is survived by
his wife of nearly 50 years, Rebecca Brookman to whom he married on August 24,
1968. He is also survived by his daughter, Wendy Anderson (Nathan) of Duluth,
MN; and 2 grandchildren, Neil and Logan Anderson.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; his brother, Dwight Brookman; and a son, Andrew Bigelow
Brookman.
Family and friends
are invited for visitation beginning at 1 p.m. with a Funeral service at 3
p.m. Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton, with Rev.
Kevin Fleming and Rev. Joe Easley officiating. Interment will take place at a
later date in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Wellsville, Ohio.
