Larry Thomas Haley, 80 passed away peacefully on Saturday,
April 1, 2017 at his
home, following his battle with cancer.
He was born on February 17, 1937, in Haubstadt, IN to
the late Thomas and Edna (Hirsch) Haley.
He met his loving wife, Shirley, at the Breivogel
farm and both attended Haubstadt High School. They were married at St. James
Church on May 4, 1957. His brother Keith was best man, and Mary Jo Rexing, Shirley’s sister, was maid of honor. Larry
loved Keith who may seem tough but “he would give anyone the shirt off his
back”.
Larry and Walt Rietman founded Haub
Steak House in Haubstadt in 1970, and also bought Humpert’s
Tavern (Carriage Inn) together. Eventually the business was
split in early 70’s, and Larry was sole owner of Haub’s
for the remaining years
until 2016. Haub’s received numerous awards as the
Best Steak House in the
Tri-state area. Larry created unique recipes over the
years such as black bean
soup, Tornedos of Beef, Coquille St Jacque, and their famous bread pudding .
Before Haub’s, he worked at Emge
Meat Packing Company. He learned to bone beef which is a skill he used at the
restaurant. During this time, he worked at Emge’s
during the day and at Haub’s at night, sleeping on a
cot at the restaurant between orders.
Larry was a long time member of Sts. Peter and Paul
Catholic church, where he
served as Eucharistic minister, former Board member and Religious education
teacher and received the Brute award from the Catholic Diocese in 2006. He was
very close to Father Schroering and agreed to teach
religious education for him
at Sts. Peter and Paul. As Father Schroering
became ill, Larry wanted Father Tony Ernst to feel welcomed and often invited
him on golf outings. He also enjoyed golf outings with his buddies and golf
trips to Wren Lake.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 60 years, Shirley (Breivogel) Haley, his 7
children, Kent (Leah) Haley, Deann (Haley) Dunkel,
Leah (Dave) Curry, Stuart
(Loretta) Haley, Brent Haley, Erin (Andy) Schaaf and
Robyn (Bryan) Hughes, 24
grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 1 great- great grandchildren.
Larry was very active in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. He loved
playing poker, going on vacation with them and following their sports. He was
extremely giving and served as a role model in his faith and charity toward
others.
Larry wanted to thank everyone that had worked for him over the years. Thanks
to Tony Kramer for being a close and loving friend and a great handyman for
many years. Thanks also to Father Tony, Father Betz, Father Biju, Deacon Brandle, and Father Sudhakar and all friends and family
that supported him through his life.
