Dr. Ora J. Johnson 84 of Evansville entered rest on Monday Jan. 30, 2017 at
Woodlands Convalescent Center.

He was born on August 31, 1932 in Oakland City to Ora F. and Thelma Pauline (Julian) Johnson.

Attended grade school and high school in Oakland City, Indiana. Ora began attending Oakland City College in 1951 where he met Wanda Mae Lockamy, and married her on August 11, 1952.

Ora is survived by his wife Wanda, three Children: David Russell(Darlene0 Johnson of Wadesville, Kent Alan (Linda ) Johnson of Evansville and Vicki Jeanne Peete of Panama Beach City, FL. 6 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Brother; Steve Johnson of Jeffersonville, IN. And deceased brother Jim Johnson.

Ora received his Bachelor of Science, Oakland City University, 1971. Master of Science, Doctor of Divinity, Oakland City University, 1996. Ora sold cars for the local Chevrolet dealership in Oakland City before joining the sales staff of Western & Southern Insurance Company, Evansville, Indiana, 1956-1970.

Ora served as pastor of several General Baptist Churches and he held several other positions in the General Baptist Denomination. Pastored the Corydon (Kentucky) General Baptist Church, 1965-1968 where he was ordained in 1966. Also, pastored the Wadesville (Indiana) General Baptist Church, 1968-1970, the North Haven General Baptist Church, Evansville, 1970-1975. Served as President of the General Baptist Home Mission Board, 1972-1973, and General Board of General Baptist., 1972-1976. Produced a weekly TV broadcast – Moments of Worship 1973-1974. Served as the National director evangelism and church growth for General Baptist, 1976-1982. Pastored the 1st General Baptist Church, Malden, 1982-1988, the Howell General Baptist Church, Evansville, 1989-1990. Served as the assistant to the Vice President Development and for denomination affairs Oakland City University, 1990-1992. Served as the Moderator of the General Association of General Baptist, 1991.Pastored the 1st General Baptist Church, Owensboro, Kentucky, 1993-1995. Served as the Executive vice president, Oakland City University, 1994-2005. Ora also pastored the Howell United Methodist Church, 2007-2012 before reluctantly retiring from over 47 years of faithful service in the Kingdom of his Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Named Outstanding Theologian of 1971, General Baptist Brotherhood; recipient Good Shepherd award Boy Scouts American, 1980. Board directors Tri-State Youth for Christ, 2002-2015. Member Christian Resource Association, Evangelization Forum, National Association Evangelicals, Malden Ministerial Alliance (president 1983), Malden Chamber of Commerce (president 1985-1986), Malden Optimist, Kiwanis (board directors Evansville club 1975, Poplar Bluff club 1981-1983, Oakland City club 1997-1999), Evansville Chamber of Commerce. President Greater Evansville Sunday School Association, 1975. President Evansville Clergy Association, 1975-1976. 

Services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday Feb. 2,2017 at North Haven General Baptist Church 1800 Haven Dr. Evansville, IN. Rev. David Kelle and Rev. Steven Dame will be officiating, Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until services at the church. Family has entrusted Lamb-Basham Memorial Chapel for personal assistance.
