Dorothy Catherine (Dot) Spore, 91, (09/20/1923 - 09/12/2015) of Bloomington, died Saturday morning at Autumn Hills, East Moores Pike, Bloomington.
She was born in Indianapolis to Harry Virgil Moore and Dorothy K. (Romiser) Moore.
Dorothy spent her early years in Indianapolis, where her father was a prominent band leader and saxophonist in the 1920’s. Dot was baptized in the Christ Episcopal Church on the Circle. Following the early divorce of her parents, Dot was brought to Bloomington, where she was raised by her mother and grandmother on East First Street. She attended Elm Heights and graduated from Bloomington High School in 1941. Her class recently held its 2015 class reunion, celebrating 74 years. Dot graduated from Indiana University School of Education in 1950 and obtained a teaching license. Her first teaching job was at Unionville School. In between raising her children, she held several teaching and substitute teaching jobs over the years. She met her husband Gerald L (Jerry) Spore at IU, and they were married in 1950, and celebrated 65 years together, all in Bloomington. Dot’s interests were in 4-H, leading a club for many years. She was also active in Mt. Gilead Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School. She and Jerry later joined First Christian Church. She also was active in her Home Ec Club, and a former board member of the Monroe County History Center Dot was always proud of her connection to the Bloomington Star-Courier newspaper, which her great-grandfather Henry James Feltus founded in 1875.
Survivors include her husband Gerald L. Spore, daughter, Jennifer Catherine (Spore) Mullis, sons, Daniel R. Spore (Janet), and James L. Spore (Jennifer). Grandchildren include Loretta Sare, Heather Teske(Dave), Lindy Fischer (Marcus), Krista Jaworski (Jake), Jessica Spore and Jackson Spore. Great grandchildren are, Jacob Sare (Hannah), Anna Sare, Abigail Yeargin, Emily Yeargin, Ethan Teske, Sophia Teske, Sonoma Fischer, Cora Fischer and Scarlett Jaworski and great-great grandchildren, Jacob Sare Jr., Eli Sare-Upchurch and Piper Sare.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one great grandson Nathan C. Sare.
Services will be 10:00 am Tuesday September 15, 2015 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. Bloomington. Burial will follow at Owensville Cemetery in Owensville, IN.
Visitation will be on Monday September 14, 2015 from 4-8 pm at The Funeral Chapel.
