Jean Parker (Andrew) Gilbert, 98, passed away peacefully at
Gibson General Hospital on August 30, 2015, with her family by her side.
Jean was born on May 17, 1917, in Somerset, KY, to Daniel and Bess Andrew and
lived there until 1929 when her family moved to Princeton, IN. She graduated
from Princeton High School in 1935. On January 9, 1937, she married O. M.
Gilbert, Jr. (“Mac”) who preceded her in death in 1958.
For many years, Jean worked at Princeton Gardens, the family business. In 1966,
she began working at Princeton High School as library assistant and thoroughly
enjoyed her time there. She retired from North Gibson School Corp. in 1991, and
in her later years worked at the Princeton Public Library. An avid reader her
entire life, Jean was always interested in literature.
Jean possessed strong faith and was the oldest member of her beloved First
Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed being active in local literary clubs, namely
Tourists and Sorosis, her church circle, and for many
years was an active member of Psi Iota Xi. A supporter of the arts, she enjoyed
stage performances by high-school groups, the Broadway Players, and the Evansville
Philharmonic. An avid bridge player, she was formerly active in several card
clubs. Jean also enjoyed her many years of volunteering as a Pink Lady at
Gibson General Hospital. Mostly she enjoyed family dinners and gatherings
surrounded by her offspring.
Jean was deeply loved and so admired by her family. Survivors include son
George A. Gilbert (Malinda) and daughter Sara (Gilbert) Viehe
of Princeton, IN; grandchildren Cristi Jean (Crimm) Fenton (Bill) of Greenwood, IN, Carter Crimm (Jill) of Fishers, IN, Neile
(Gilbert) McQueen (Matt) of Columbus, IN, Todd A. Gilbert of Auburn, AL, Jay Viehe (Chastalee) and Aaron Viehe of Haubstadt, and Cari Jean
(Viehe) Kendall (Ben) of Denver, CO;
great-grandchildren Jena and Jackson Fenton, Connor and Lauren Crimm; Samantha, Chase, and Caroline McQueen, Leon Viehe, and Abigail Jean Kendall; son-in-law Paul Crimm of Evansville, IN; Jean’s brother Jim Andrew of
Corvallis, OR; and special niece and nephews Stephanie (Andrew) Hawkinson of Corvallis, OR, Daniel Andrew of McAllen, TX,
and Gilbert Peirce of Vero Beach, FL.
In addition to her husband and parents, Jean was preceded in death by her
daughter Patricia Jean (Gilbert) Crimm (2009),
in-laws Oscar M. and Pearle Gilbert, step-father “Daddy Bill” Allen, and many
close friends.
Jean will be remembered with a service at Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton, IN,
on Friday, Sept. 4, at 1 PM with graveside service immediately following at
Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation prior to the service will be from 10-1 PM.
