Gary Lee Phillips, 67, of Oakland City, Indiana passed away on February 13, 2015.

Gary was born on March 2, 1947 to Richard L. Phillips and G. Amazette (Collins) Phillips.

Gary lived his entire life in Oakland City and enjoyed many lifelong friendships. He graduated from Oakland City High School in 1965 and always enjoyed cheering for the Acorns and later the Trojans. He was a member of the inaugural class at Indiana State University at Evansville which later became the University of Southern Indiana. Each of his children knew the Oakland City High School fight song, and it was his tradition to sing the fight song before each game. 

Gary had a number of hobbies throughout his life including field trialing, showing horses, and golf to name a few. Gary was happiest and most proud when watching his children or grandchildren participate in sports and activities. For many years, Gary served in local and state politics. Through the years, Gary was on the Columbia Township Advisory Board, the Oakland City Council, Chairman of Gibson County Democratic Party, the Treasurer for Indiana’s 8th Congregational District Democratic Party, President of the Indiana Field Trial Association, Vice President of the Capitol Field Trial Club, Board of Directors of the Kentucky Lake Field Trial Club, and a District and International UMWA Organizer. Gary was also a member of the UMWA Local #9926 at the Lynnville Mine, UMWA Local #1826, IUOE Local #181, Masonic Lodge #467 in Oakland City, Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Oakland City. 

Gary is survived by his wife, Marsha J. (McDevitt) Phillips, his daughter Randa K. Deaton (Kevin) of Georgetown, IN, his two sons Christopher A. Phillips (Erin) of Adrian, MI and Nathan J. Phillips (Shay) of Oakland City, IN. Gary is also survived by seven grandchildren: Kelby & Tristan Deaton (Randa); Miley & Ephraim Phillips (Christopher); Ethan, Addyson, and Malia Phillips (Nathan). He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother R. Alan Phillips. 

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday C.S.T., Feb. 18, 2015 at the Corn-Colvin Funeral Home in Oakland City, with Rev. Darrin Nossett and Rev. Matt Malin officiating. Burial will follow in the Montgomery Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8:30 p.m. C.S.T.Tuesday with a Masonic Memorial Service at 7:30 p.m. and from 9 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.
