Raymond A. Dewig, 89, of
Haubstadt, IN passed away at his residence surrounded by his family on
February, 23, 2015.
Raymond was born on December 2, 1925, in Haubstadt, IN
to the late Alois and Anna (Anslinger)
Dewig.
Early on, Ray worked on his father’s farm, served in
WWII in the army, was employed with Lutz brothers Plumbing and Heating Company,
bartended at Singer’s Tavern, and operated a bread route. From 1955 to 1995 Ray
owned and operated Dewig Grain Elevator. Being
involved in many fraternal and civic organizations, Ray held offices in the
American Legion #194 the Chamber of Commerce, and the Haubstadt Voluntary Fire
Department for 44 years where he also served as chief. He was also
charter member of the Haubstadt Investment Club and maintained membership in
the Knights of St. John. Active in politics, he served sixteen years on
the Gibson County Council and is one of its past presidents. In the mid 1950’s
Ray helped to organize and co-sponsor the Haubstadt Little League Program,
which continues to flourish and aid youngsters in becoming better citizens. He
also played Basketball in high school as well as in the military where he was
one of Haubstadt’s best guards. Ray enjoyed hunting, bowling, and golfing. He was
also an avid Cardinals Baseball and Gibson Southern Titans sports fan. The Dewig family has held lifelong membership in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. In 1998 Ray and Charlyne began their Golden Jubilee celebration at Mass in
this same parish church where their wedding has taken place.
He is preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffrey Pfister, sisters and brothers Helen Weber, Esther Byrne and
Norman Dewig.
He is survived by his wife of 66 yrs., Charlyne (Wilm) Dewig of Haubstadt, IN, children Don (Joyce) Dewig of Haubstadt, IN, Ron (Ann) Dewig
of Mt Vernon, IN, Ellen (Steve) Utley of Haubstadt, IN, Cheryl (Mark) Rietman of Evansville, IN, Tim (Shelley) Dewig of Evansville, IN, Richard (Diana) Dewig of Evansville, IN, Sandy (Richard) Pfister of Evansville, IN, Chris (Tammie) Dewig of Haubstadt, IN, 23 Grandchildren, 16 great
grandchildren, Brothers and Sisters Eugene Dewig of
Haubstadt, IN, Irma Helfrich of Haubstadt, IN, Margie (Gene) Schneider of Fort
Branch, IN, and Brothers-in-Law, Robert Byrne of Tempe, AZ and John Wilm of Haubstadt,IN.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday,
Feb. 26, 2015 at Sts. Peter and Paul at 3:30 PM with
Fathers Tony Ernst and Bhastati Sudhakar
co-celebrants, burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be on Wednesday Feb. 25, 2015 from
2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Stodghill Funeral Home
in Fort Branch, IN. and again from 2:30 PM until service time at the
church.
