Mabel L. Bailey, 89 of Oakland City, passed away
Thursday, November 27, 2014 at Good Samaritan-Northwood in Jasper.
She was born in Pike County on January 28, 1925 to the
late William and Cora Sickman.
She had lived in Oakland City most of her lifetime and
she and her husband, wintered in Tavares, Florida for 24 years. She was a
member of the Oakland City First General Baptist Church and the Philathea Sunday school class and was also both a Sunday
school secretary and teacher. She retired in 1986 after 19 years as a school
teacher at Castle Junior High School, Petersburg High School and then Pike
Central High School. She was also a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers
Association and the Tri-Kappa Sorority. Mabel had won several awards for
quilting while in Florida and was a member there of the Lake County Quilters
Guild.
Mabel is survived by her husband of 73 years, Jess Bailey; two sons and
daughters-in-law, Tony and Joan Bailey of Oakland City and Steven and Connie
Bailey of Holland, Michigan; a daughter-in-law, Sarah Bailey of Indianapolis;
five grandchildren, Mike (Kitty) Bailey of Carlsbad, California, Jennifer
(Craig) Newton of Bloomington, Indiana, Susan (David) Eldridge of Cookeville,
Tennessee, David (Erica) Bailey of Edwardsburg, Michigan and Jessica Bailey of
Atlanta, Georgia; six great granddaughters; also several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, James Bailey; a sister, Esther
Melton and two brothers, Virgil Neumann and Willard Sickman.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. CST on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at
the Oakland City First General Baptist Church, 224 W. Harrison Street, with
Pastor Alec Hensley, Pastor Darin Nossett and Jim Trentham officiating. Burial will follow at Montgomery
Cemetery in Oakland City.
Visitation will be from 3 until 7 p.m. CST on Friday
at the Corn-Colvin Funeral Home in Oakland City.
