Alice Marie Callis Vaughn
age 96 of 750 Chestnut St., Greenville, OH, widow of Merle Winfred Vaughn,
passed away peacefully at 6:05 a.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at the
Brethren Retirement Community.
She was born December 5, 1917, in Fort Branch, IN,
daughter of the late Richard “Curtis” and Clara (Mangrum)
Callis.
She married Merle on April 12, 1936, and became a
widow on August 17, 1948, when he died in a tractor/train accident.
She lived in Ft. Branch and Princeton, IN, most of
her life, then at the Brethren Retirement Community since 2007. With the help
of the Lord, Alice reared four children as a young widow, served as a
Kindergarten Sunday School teacher at the Princeton Church of God for 20 years,
and assembled relays for Potter-Brumfield Electronics for 33 years. She will be
remembered for her faith in God, for overcoming adversity, and for her humor,
stories, cooking, sewing, and making irreplaceable childhood memories for her
family.
Many years after Merle’s death, once the children
were raised, Alice began to consider life with another husband. A courtship
began that developed into plans to marry, but before they could marry, her
suitor died suddenly of a heart attack. She considered his daughter, Shelia
Brokaw, to be another daughter from that point on, and Shelia’s daughter,
Julie, to be another granddaughter. Today they live in Beaumont, CA.
In addition to Shelia and Julie, Alice Vaughn is
survived by four children and their spouses, Carol and Donald “Don” Rutter,
Joyce and Myrl Nisely,
Donna and Douglas “Doug” Leis, all of Greenville, OH, and son, Larry Vaughn, of
Princeton, IN; ten grandchildren and their spouses, Dennis and Teresa Rutter,
David and Dwanna Rutter all of Greenville, OH, Duane
and Jena Rutter of Monroe, OH, Eric Nisely of
Greenville, OH, Retha and Michael “Mike” Nester of
Roanoke Rapids, NC, Cynnema and Jeffrey “Jeff” Petry of Hollansburg, OH, Cherie
and Gary Allen II of Virginia Beach, VA, Shannon and David Pomeranz
of Sarasota, FL, Michelle and Terry French, and Melissa and Kevin Steiner all
of O’Fallon, MO; 17 Great-Grandchildren; 6 Great-Great grandchildren; a
sister-in-law and brother-in-law Margaret and Richard “Dick” Mason, of
Princeton, IN, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her husband and parents, Alice was
preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Marlene Vaughn; a sister and
brother-in-law, Ermadell and Paul Coleman; three
brothers and sisters-in-law, Ernest “Bud” and Virginia Callis,
Richard “Glenn” and Peggy Callis, Glenn’s first wife Dalpha Callis, and Lawrence Callis; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Emerson “E. Nye”
and Vernie Vaughn; a sister-in-law and two
brothers-in-law, Angie and Everett Defur, and Angie’s
first husband, Gene Emerson.
Family will receive friends Monday, May 5, 2014,
from 12 to 2 p.m. at Colvin Funeral Home, Princeton, IN. Funeral service will
begin at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Jim Walters officiating followed by burial in the
Odd Fellows Cemetery.
