Leo J. Weiss, 84, Haubstadt passed
away peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital
surrounded by his family.
He was born Oct. 27, 1928 in
Haubstadt to John A. and Lydia (Buck) Weiss.
He retired from co-ownership of
Weiss Motor Sales, Inc. after more than 60 years of service. He was best known
for his expertise at autobody repair and
refinishing.
He proudly served his country first
as a military test driver at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds before becoming a
member of the Japan Logistical Command in the American Occupation of Japan
during the Korean War. He enjoyed sharing his military experiences. He was
especially proud of climbing Mt. Fujiyama.
Leo was a lifetime member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Haubstadt. He was also
a lifetime member of the VFW Pos #2714, a member of
Haubstadt American Legion Post #194, the NRA, and a past member of the Knights
of St John Post #345 Haubstadt. He was known for his great sense of humor, his
love of life, and for cruising the streets of Haubstadt in his red and white
jeep with his faithful dog riding as co-pilot.
Leo is preceded in death by his
parents, daughter Gloria Harper, grandson Ryan Weiss, sister Virginia, and
brother John G., son-in-law Jeff Bloodworth, and
daughter–in-law Sandra Weiss.Survivors include his
wife of more than 62 years Betty (Dewig) Weiss, Son
Rick Weiss, Haubstadt, daughter Donna Weiss, Evansville, daughter Marleen (Keith) Bloodworth,
Haubstadt, daughter Nanette (Bob) Buttrum, Oakland
City, son Kelly (Debbie) Weiss, Haubstadt, daughter Ramona Weiss, Swanton,
Ohio, sisters Leona Thiel, Evansville, Bernice (Tom) Emge,
Newburgh, Dorothy (Don) Penner, Lafeyette,
Irma (John) Stone, Owensville. 17 grandchildren and 14
great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be
conducted on Friday, Sept. 13, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Sts.
Peter and Paul Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery with
graveside military rites conducted by the VFW Post #2714 and the Haubstadt
American Legion #194.
Visitation will be Thursday, Sept
12, 2013 from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Stodghill Funeral
Home in Fort Branch and again at the church from 9 a.m. till time of service. A
Rosary will be recited at the funeral home on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. by
Father Tony Ernst.
