Eileen Mae (Elpers)
Carter of Fort Branch died on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at Deaconess
Hospital.
She was born in Fort Branch on May 9, 1928 to
the late Christina (Emge) and Conrad “Coonie” Elpers.
Eileen graduated from Fort Branch High School and the IU School of
Nursing. After working as a nurse in Denver, Colorado for a time, she
returned to Indiana to work for St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville. Later,
she would devote her time to being a homemaker and raising her five children
and being a positive influence in her grandchildren's lives. She was
involved in organizations such as the Gibson County Extension Homemakers and
Psi Iota Xi in Fort Branch. She was an avid bridge player since college
and always looked forward to her bridge group gatherings over the years.
She was also an active member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Fort Branch,
helping with many ministries of the church and school.
Eileen married Carl Carter in 1956, and together they were raising five
children until his death in 1984. She was also preceded in death by her
parents and her brothers Donald and Roger “Pete” Elpers
of Anderson, IN.
Eileen is survived by her children Keith (Louise) Carter and Susan (Chris)
Simpson of Evansville, IN, Cindy (Tom) Andres of Floyds Knobs, IN, David
(Becky) Carter of Charlotte, NC, and Barbie (Gary) Rexing
of northern Vanderburgh County. She is also survived by her brother
Robert (Doris) Elpers of Fort Branch, sister-in-law
Margie Elpers of Anderson, and Carl’s siblings Joy Schneebeli of Seattle, WA, Patsy Carter of Santa Monica,
CA, John (Barbara) Carter of Tucson, AZ, Ann Scheider
of Claremont, CA, and Judy (Bob) Gardiner of Woodbury, MN.
Eileen was well loved by her sixteen grandchildren. They looked forward
to Grandma bringing her baked goods to family gatherings and the time she would
spend enjoying their company and keeping up with their activities. She
will be sorely missed by Mia Carter; Joshua, Kara, Logan, and Makayla Simpson;
Kevin and Stephanie Andres; Ryan, Bradley, Jason, Kristin, and Amanda Carter;
and Kendra, Erica, Carter, and Ian Rexing.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm CDT Friday, August 30 at Stodghill
Funeral home in Fort Branch, Indiana. There will also be visitation at
the funeral home from 9am to 10:40 am CDT on Saturday August 31, with a funeral
Mass at 11 am CDT at Holy Cross Church in Fort Branch. Burial will be at
Holy Cross Cemetery in Fort Branch.
