Milton Ray Young, 85, passed away at St. Mary’s
Medical Center July 11.
He was born in Evansville on April 10, 1928 at his
home.
He attended Fulton Grade School and graduated from
Central High School in 1947. He worked at Huffman’s Grocery Store while he was
in high school.
Milton began a sheet metal apprenticeship in 1947
but switched to a brick mason apprenticeship. He was a sergeant in the U.S.
Army who served two years in the Korean War. He drove tanks in the 140th Tank
Battalion.
He met the love of his life, Betty, at a church
program in 1948. They were married Feb. 8, 1952 and celebrated their 60th
wedding anniversary this year.
After finishing his apprenticeship and working for
other construction companies, he also owned his own construction company. He
began working at Alcoa in 1965 as a brick mason.
Milton and his family moved to Boonville in 1969.
He was the instructor at the North High School Trade
School teaching the Alcoa Bricklayers Apprenticeship program from 1974 – 1984.
He was a life member of the International Aluminum Workers Local 104.
Milton loved the river and had a river camp with his
family during his younger years and owned nine different boats during his life.
He loved to water ski, fish, swim and go for boat rides. During the CB craze
his handle was “River Rat.”
He also loved cars. The first car he bought was a
1931 Model A Ford.
Milton also loved to read books and the daily
newspaper right up until the time of his death.
He was president of the Boonville High School Band Booster’s Club from 1971 – 1974. He and his wife were
chaperons for the band’s trip to New Orleans and the Mardi Gras
in 1973.
At the time of his death he was living in Boonville
with his daughter. He was a member of Bethel United Church Of
Christ. For many years he was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church,
where he served on several committees and also served as an usher many times.
He was a member of VFW Post 1114 and the American
Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin S.
& Katie Young, Sr., four sisters, Goldie Manz,
Catherine Vessels, Emma Jane Lawrence & Mabel “Vernie”
Lawrence and his beloved nephew, Donnie Manz.
Milton is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty”;
daughter, Brenda Young; grandson, Steven Kempf of
Evansville; granddaughter, Katie Kempf of Boonville;
brother, Benjamin of Chandler; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and
great- nephews.
Funeral Service 10:00 AM Thursday July 18, 2013 at
Koehler Funeral Home Boonville Chapel. Burial in Nobles Chapel Cemetery near Elberfeld with military rites by the Warrick County Veteran
Memorial Services.
