Donald Adam Falls, 77, of Oakland City, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2013 surrounded by family at home.
Don was born in Pike County on November 14, 1935 to Golda and Adam Falls.
Don attended Hosmer and Winslow schools until the eighth grade when the
family moved to Oakland
City, Indiana. Don graduated from Oakland City High
School in
1955 where he played all four major sports. In track he held high school
records in high jump, broad jump, shot put and pole vault. He started on
varsity teams of football and basketball as a freshman. He was honored at the
Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame for scoring 55 points in a basketball game
against Haubstadt in 1955 and held the Gibson county scoring record for several
years. Upon graduation from high school, Don was offered several major Division
I scholarships for basketball and football but chose to stay close to home and
play for Oakland City College were he accepted a scholarship to play baseball
and basketball. He continued to participate in basketball and softball into his
fifties.
Don was married to his high
school sweetheart Sharon Parke for 57 years. They were married on November 23,
1955.
As a lifelong resident of Oakland City, Don gave much of his time and support to the
community. In the 1960's he was on a committee to start Little League and built
the first baseball field where he coached Little League for several years. Don
was an enthusiastic fan of all Wood Memorial sports where he was a regular
fixture at all basketball games. Don was a volunteer fireman for 49 years and
was an active member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Oakland City for 45 years. He was also a 46 year member of the Oakland City Masonic Lodge #467 F. & A. M. Don was
employed at Whirlpool Corporation in supervision 36 years before retiring in
1992. Don was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed sharing those outings
with his friends and family. He was a Purdue Boilermaker fan and enjoyed the
rivalry with his IU friends.
Don was preceded in death by
his parents; sister, Geraldine Bartley; and brother, Robert Falls.
He is survived by his wife,
Sharon (Parke) Falls; sons, Rick (Cathy) Falls, Kevin (Regina) Falls, Chris
(Jill) Falls; daughter, Wendy Falls; grandchildren, Taryn
Falls, Carissa (Brandon) Maikranz,
Adam (Jen) Falls, Ashley Falls (Wesley) , Kristin (George) Allen, Zeke (Renee)
Wilson, Brittany Wilson, Lathan Falls, Alton Falls,
and Blake Falls; great-grandchildren, Alexis, Aubri, Kaleigh, Inessa, Kylee, Kenadi, Kaitlyn, Abygail, Summer, Briella and Brianna; and a brother, Bert Falls.
Funeral Service will be at 10:00 AM, Friday, May 3, 2013, at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Oakland City, with Dr. Douglas Low officiating burial in Montgomery Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2:00 -8:00 PM
