N. Sherrell Marginet, 76, of Fort Branch, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Oakland City.
Born Sept. 18, 1934 in Dugger, he was the son
of George and H.Maxine (Alsman)
Marginet.
Sherrell was employed with the South Gibson School Corp. for
39 years where he was principal of Haubstadt School, Owensville School and Gibson Southern High Schools. He coached seventh and eighth grade
basketball at Fort Branch Jr. High School, fourth, fifth, sixth grade physical education at Fort Branch, Owensville High School basketball, track and cross country coach. He was a drivers training
instructor and had the first class to go to I.U. and use the simulator. Sherrell taught at Owensville for five years where he
taught senior english and
grammar and the same for three years at Haubstadt. He was the principal at Haubstadt High School and elementary school. He was a principal at Gibson Southern High
School for seven years and Owensville for five years; he retired in 1997.
Sherrell was an active 4-H sponsor. He was a trustee for the
Lorena Reed Scholarship, a charter member of the Fort Branch Optimist Club
where he was district governor, and also was also active in the Optimist Punt Pass and Kick program. He was a Kentucky Colonel, a
member of the National Cattlemen's Association, the Indiana Beef Cattlemen's
Association, chairman of the Indiana Regional Government Association, a lay
leader at the Fort Branch First United Methodist Church where he was a member. He was a member of the I.U.
basketball team from 1953-54 and the I.U. baseball team, a member of the Murray State University basketball and baseball teams, a member of the I.U. I Mens Club and the Murray State University M Mens
Club.
He received a BS degree in education from Murray State University, an MS degree in education from I.U., and Education
Specialist doctorate degree in school house administration from I.U. He was
appointed by Gov. Evan Bayh to the Educational
Excellence Committee, president for two or three years of the Pocket Athletic
Conference Coaches and Principal’s Association, the Big Eight Coaches and
Principal’s Association, a member of the Indiana High School Athletic
Association (IHSAA), the Hoosier Heritage Wabash River Commission. In 1951, he
was a member of the Junior American Legion Baseball team. He did the summer
athletic program for the fourth, fifth and sixth grades, and a member of the
Indiana School of Education, He sponsored tickets for the Hadi
Shrine Circus, was a member of the U.S. Army where he was a first LT. where he
did three tours of active duty. He also was in the ROTC at Murray State University. He was a Gibson County Commissioner for eight
years.
Sherrell is survived by his wife, Jane (Hudleson)
Marginet of Fort Branch; a daughter, Sherry [Steven]
Michel of Fort Branch; a son, Marty [Brittany] Marginet of Fort Branch;
two grandchildren, Stacey and Stuart [Krissie]
Michel; one great-grandchild, Kimber Michel; and two
step great-grandchildren, Kaia and Sophie Gerts. Also surviving are two aunts, five nieces and
several cousins.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011 at the Fort Branch First Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ron Willis officiating. Burial will follow at Walnut Hill Cemetery in Fort Branch.
Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Friday Feb. 11, 2011 at Stodghill Funeral Home
on Ind. 168 West in Fort Branch, and again from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until the service hour at the church.
