Thos. Sumners is Dead

Another of the friends of our boyhood has joined the silent majority. Tom Sumners died at Jackson, Mississippi last Monday (16 Sep 1912) from the effects of malarial fever.

Funeral services were held at the General Baptist church, of which he was a member, Thursday morning Rev. Edwards officiating. The remains were interred in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

Thomas was the son of the late Joseph Sumners and was born on the farm about a mile south-east of this place and now occupied by E.D. Emerson, January 1853.

He was married to Miss Maude Matthews March 23, 1877.

About sixteen years ago he took up his residence in Evansville and later went to Jackson, Mississippi to assist his son Welsey, who was in business there and who is now quite ill with malarial fever.

He is survived by the wife, four sons, and two daughters, all of whom are grown and one brother, Oscar of this place. Thus, “one by one we will cross the river”.
