Mt. Carmel Republican.

The Republican is informed that a terrible tragedy occurred in the vicinity of Crawleyville, several miles south of Mt. Carmel in Gibson County, Monday, which cost the life of Fred Smith, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Newt Smith, well known residents of that neighborhood. According to the report given the paper, Smith, who was about 18 or 19 years of age, was employed as farm hand by Thomas Freeman. Monday morning, June 3, 1918, he was using a disc harrow drawn by two horses, when the team became frightened and ran away.  Smith was thrown in front of the harrow and his body and limbs were practically cut to pieces. He was rushed to a Evansville hospital for treatment, but it is reported his death occurred there late Monday evening.

------------

The foregoing story of the tragedy is confirmed by information received here by County Assessor James P. Roby, who is well acquainted with the bereaved family, who reside some distance below Crawleyville in Gibson county.
