| Charles Edward Smith passed away on December 1,
   2009 at the Jordan Valley Medical Center in West
    Jordan, Utah due to complications from cardiovascular disease.
  He was born on December 4, 1930 to the late Rastus and
  Sophie (Stillwell) Smith of Oakland City, Indiana. 
 Charles was a 1949 graduate of Oakland City High School where he played football and participated in
  student council. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during the
  Korean War from 1951-1953 before being honorably discharged as a corporal.
  Upon returning from the service, he attended Oakland City College majoring in education where he graduated in 1957.
  He began a career as an educator at Winslow High School prior to the completion of his Masters degree in
  1961 from Indiana University. Charles spent most of his career in the North Gibson School
  Corporation serving first as a teacher, then as assistant principal at Princeton High School. He later became business manager at the central
  office before becoming the first principal of Princeton Community Middle School where he eventually retired. During the 1970’s he
  served on the board of the Indiana Selective Service System.
 
 He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the American
  Legion. Since 2005, he has resided in Fishers, Indiana to be near his
  children and grandchildren where his sense of humor always generated smiles.
 
 Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Cantrell Smith, son, Edward CR,
  daughter, Rachel Ann Briscoe and five grandchildren: Jordan Alyse, Quinton Oliver, Lydia Grace, Sophia Rose, and Alanna
  Marie.
 
 He attended Living Word Bible Church of Indianapolis where a memorial service
  will be held at 7:00 PM on
  Saturday, December 5.
 
 Visitation will be from 1:30 PM until 3:30 P.M. on Sunday,
   December 6, 2009 at the
  Corn-Colvin Funeral Home in Oakland City, IN. Following the visitation there will be a graveside
  service at the Montgomery Cemetery in Oakland City officiated by Rev. Terryl Almond. VFW Post
  #1147 will provide full military rites at the cemetery.
