CARMI,
Ill. — Graveside funeral services for Verla Davis,
66, of Carmi, Ill., were at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Martin Cemetery near Oakland
City.
She passed away Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at Phoenix Rehabilitation and Nursing from brain cancer.
She was born Dec. 21, 1942, in Maunie, Ill.,
daughter of Rev. Martin and Mildred Arlene (Tower) Holtzclaw.
She married Henry Dwight Davis Aug. 12, 1960, in New
Haven, Ill.
He preceded her in death Oct. 3, 2000.
She was
a certified nursing aide, past president and lifetime member of Carmi VFW Post
Ladies Auxiliary and a lifetime member of Carmi American Legion Post. She
attended First Apostolic Church of New Haven.
Surviving are a daughter, Stephanie (Rick) Campbell of
Carmi; son Frank Davis of Enfield, Ill., and his girlfriend Toni Lydick; three brothers, Max (Rosemary) Holtzclaw
of Mooresville, Rev. Roy (Joyce) Holtzclaw of Maunie, Andrew (Lorna) Holtzclaw
of Carmi; three sisters, Margaret Stover of Norris City, Ill., Martha Sue
(Dewey) Glore of Indianapolis, June (Karl) Hamann of Pasco. Wash.; granddaughters Sierra Beasley of
Carmi and Makenzie Davis of Evansville;
brothers-in-law Mark Davis of Petersburg, Wilby Watts
of Herald, Ill., sisters-in-law, Pat Holtzclaw and
Garnet Abell of Carmi, Sonya (Bob) Mobley of Herald,
Ill., and Lana (Bill) Meyerholtz of Texas; many
nieces and nephews, including Andrea and Drew Howe of Princeton and Justin,
Matthew and Greg Davis and Abram Coleman of Petersburg.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, three
infant siblings, her brother Rev. Lloyd “Sonny” Holtzclaw,
sister Wanda Randolph; a nephew, Ricky Paul Stover and
sister-in-law, Joan Watts
