Marie Kroeger, 85, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2009 at Good Samaritan
Home in Oakland City.
She attended St. John’s Church
of Buckskin and was a member of the Ladies Guild at the church and also a
member of the Lynnville Order of Eastern Star. She was also a hostess at the
former Jerry’s Restaurant in Oakland City.
She was born March 6, 1924
in Crofton, Kentucky
to Fred H. & Verah (Curneal)
Overton, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law,
Dorothy "Dottie" Nell (Linville) Kroeger in
2008.
Marie was a devoted and loving wife, a loving and supportive mother,
grandmother, and great grand-mother. She loved spending time with her family
and especially enjoyed having her grandchildren over to do things with her. She
was always active and when not at work she would be busy in the yard or garden
during daylight hours and working on quilts in the evenings. The family moved
from Evansville to their farm near
Buckskin in 1954. Marie and her children worked the farm during the week while
her husband, Freeman was on the road working construction. She learned to do
nearly everything you could think of to keep things going and the family fed.
She had gardens, raised chickens and canned vegetables, whatever the need she
would find a way to get it done. Freeman had a heart attack in 1957 and Marie
started cooking at Buckskin school to help with family expenses. She made a lot
of good friends there and being a very good cook a lot of kids enjoyed the
meals that she prepared. Freeman went home to be with our Lord Jesus in 1966.
Marie then went to work at Windsor Plastics, where she worked for 22 years, to
support herself and help her family. She continued to
live and work on the farm until a few years ago when it became necessary to
move because of the farm being mined for coal. Even though she no longer had the
farm to work on she continued to do a lot of yard work growing flowers and
working outside during the day and quilting in the evenings. She continued to
quilt even after going in the nursing home. We have lost the matriarch of our
family and will miss her greatly, but we know that she is now with our heavenly
father and has rejoined her family that has gone home before her. We are sure
that she will be helping Jesus prepare a place for the rest of the family when
our time comes to go home.
Marie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sonja and Bruce Donohoo of Elberfeld; son,
Stephen Kroeger of Elberfeld;
4 grandchildren, Jayne Tang, Dave Kroeger, Wayne Donohoo and Brad Donohoo; 12
great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Fred Overton of Atlanta, GA and Dan Overton of
Madisonville, KY; and 3 sisters, Angela Alexander of Evansville, Francis
Dockery of Evansville and Frankie Oldham of Clarksville, TN.
Funeral services will be held graveside on Thursday September 3, 2009 at 11:00
A.M. at St. John’s Cemetery in Buckskin, with the Pastor Frank Sapp
officiating. Burial will follow. There will be no visitation. Family and
