The burial location was reportedly on a small knoll in the left-center of the above photograph; there may have been an orchard located there at one time.  Only one burial was known to have existed here.

This was a section of land homesteaded by Philip W Martin.  The headstone has been preserved by Mr. & Mrs Don Rumble.

Photos below taken 22 Oct 2020.  In early March 2017 a toronado destroyed the home and outbuildings that stood on the grassy

area in the center of this photo.  A tree had stood adjacent to where the Rumble's had placed the headstone.  The tree is gone.

The two pieces of the headstone have been preserved.

  • Name: Phillip Wiggins MARTIN
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: ABT 1788 in PA, USA
  • Death: 1846
  • Burial: Cynthiana, IN
  • Note: Don Ross Rumble farm
  • Religion: Methodist
  • Note:

They resided mostly in Gibson Co, Indiana, where their children were born.
Polly is listed on the 1850 census for Montgomery, Gibson, IN with seven children, but no Phillip. His youngest daughter, Sarah, was born in 1843. It can be assumed, therefroe that Phillip died sometime between 1843 and 1850 (ca 1846).
Robert Knowles, Phillip?s gg-gs, reports that he visited the farm of Donald Ross Rumble near Cynthiana, IN in 2004. Don said he had Phillip?s tombstone in his yard. Phillip had been buried in one of his fields and that the tombstone had been knocked over and moved. The specific location of the grave, therefore, is unknown. Phillip is supposed to have homesteaded this farm. Phillip was a trustee of he Methodist Church in Cynthiana, a town a mile south of the Posey-Gibson county border.
Bob and Betty Knowles report they have information that Phillip?s death was in April 1850. This may be from the bible of Mary Knowles Perry, Phillip?s granddaughter through Percilla.
The Robert Gibson research shows Jesse H (b.ca 1825) as a son but this is not confirmed by other records. Since Jesse is listed is later sellling his 1/12 interest in Phillip?s land, it can reasonably be assumed he is a son.
The marriage date of 13 May 1817 is actually the date of the marriage bond (contract) signing. The actual ceremony probably took place in a church somewhat after this date.

An later abstract for Phillips Gibson County, Indiana, land shows that William, the third child, bought his siblings? shares: In 1851, John, Jesse, and Susan sold each of their 1/12 shares for $300; In 1853, Christiana and Freelove sold their 1/12 shares for $120 and $112, respectively; In 1854, Polly sells 2/3 of her widow?s share; In 1854, Syrilda sells her 1/12 for $400; In 1857, Newton sells his share for $400; In 1864 Priscilla sells her 1/11 share for $400; In 1865, Ruben and Sarah sell their 1/12 shares for $440.
