Dr. Joseph Sippy (1791-1870)

Dr. Joseph Sippy's Father, Joseph Sr., was from France, and it appears his last name was originally Tremeau before he changed it to Sippy after the war. He came over to America to fight with Gen. Lafayette during the Revolutionary War. After the war was over, he decided to stay in America and the story goes that he changed his name to avoid prosecution from the French Monarchy. He married Lucretia Johnson and had 18 children, many of them would go on to become medical doctors. Tremeau Pharmaceuticals in Massachusetts is founded by Bradford Sippy who named the company after his ancestor Joseph Tremeau Sippy. Joseph Sippy jr, founder of Newark (know Akron) was a very remarkable man. Not only was a veteran of the War of 1812, but he was also a prospector (which brought him to Fulton County). His home was a safe house for the underground railroad, and he helped the first settlers with their medical needs. He died and is buried in Neptune, Wisconsin. He married Martha Cogswell (1796-1880) in 1812 and they had six children:

Manerva
Lydie
Martha Jane
Priscilla
Arminda Rebecca
Thomas Nathaniel
