Not all of the aliens appearing before the Circuit Court of Franklin Co. were residents of that county, some were from Ripley and Dearborn, others just residents of Indiana. The Intentions, often termed "first papers," contain different information than the "second papers" when citizenship was finally granted. Frequently the "second papers" were filed in another state or a different county.
These Declaration of Intentions in Franklin County beginning in 1826 are unique because they are extant and are so early. Except for Dearborn Co., whose records start the same year, we know of no others, though we may find some hidden away. The WPA Inventory of Naturalization Returns (see THG Dec. 1976) with few exceptions list any before the early 1850s, and of course these may no longer be available in the county court houses.
The testimony was oral, the Clerk of the Court recorded it as he heard it. Enoch McCarty & Robert John, the clerks, probably struggled to understand those who spoke little or no English, resulting in many strange spellings of names and places. No attempt has been made to change these; hopefully they are presented accurately.
Date and place of other birth, arrival in the United States, residences thereafter, and in some instances names of other family members of the family are important clues for family historians. The path is opened for bridging the Atlantic for those who did not have colonial ancestors.
