Franklin County Research Help
THE FRANKLIN COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT is a great source of genealogy information for Franklin County. The library is open Monday - Thursday 9am to 8pm, Friday 9am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm. at 919 Main Street in Brookville. The director is Melody Gault and Julie Schlesselman works in the genealogy area. (Library staff can only do a minimal search and do not have time to do extensive searches.) Cost of copies is 10 cents. At the library you will find the following:
Birth Records--births 1882-1920 WPA indexed by surname.
Cemetery Records--All known cemeteries in Franklin County. Most are inscriptions from the tombstones and not the actual cemetery record.
Census Records 1820-1920--on microfilm (1890 is missing, of course); 1820-1840 indexed in book for for entire state by head of household and by age group for male and females; 1850 indexed in book form by head of household for entire state; 1860 indexed in book form by each individual for Franklin County only.
Naturalization Records 1820---on microfilm. The library also has an index of the naturalization records in miscellaneous order books in the 92 counties of Indiana.
Death Records--Deaths 1882-1920 WPA indexed by surname.
Land Entries--Earliest tract book indexed by section, township and range; Cincinnati District, indexed by name; Indianapolis District, indexed by section, township and range; Jeffersonville District, indexed by section, township and range.
Marriage Records--Marriages from 1811-1850, index only; marriages from 1850-1920, index only; marriage transcripts 1882-1920, index only, show parents' names.
Newspapers--1827-present on microfilm (1863,1864, 1947-1956 are missing); 1917-1956, actual newspapers (1920, 1921, 1932 and 1937 are missing).
Wills--1813-1936, basic information only, indexed by surname.

Family Files and Genealogies in book form - Information on families already researched, indexed.
Church & School Files - Information on church and cemetery contains all cemetery records available, such as, church, private, and public.
History Files - Information relating to broad categories, including towns, sources, and histories.
Winans & Bock Picture Collection - Many early pictures of Brookville and various points of interest in Franklin County.
DAR Revolutionary War Pension Records and Revolutionary War Soldiers Buried in Indiana.
FRANKLIN COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY has its records in the Old Seminary Building. They are trying to index all of this information. The facility is open 1-4pm on Sundays from April through September or by appointment. There are at least two very old plat maps of Franklin County there. One of these is a Library of Congress 1867 map of Franklin, Fayette, and Union counties. The Library of Congress does not have record of this map.
When you request research in Franklin County, it is important to send the best possible information to save time for both parties. Always include a self-addressed stamped envelope.
Most places ignore requests without one.

Court House hours are M-F 8:30am to 4:00pm County office staff will do minimum research, but they do not have time or the personnel to do lengthy research. They will send you the name of a local researcher to contact.The costs for copies are $1.00 per page.

Naturalization Records - Original naturalization records have been moved to the Indiana State Library and Archives. The ones in miscellaneous order books are at the Clerk's office, 1820 - most recent date.
Marriage Records - Marriages from 1811-1882, name index only, show names, date of marriage, and person performing the marriage. Marriages from 1882-1920, WPA indexed from 1882-1920, show complete application information. Marriages from
1920-present, indexed in each book, show complete application information.
Probate Records & Wills - Probate records andwills from 1811 to present are indexed in each book.
Divorce Records, Civil Records & Criminal Records are also housed at the Clerk's Office.
Copies of all items are $1.00 per page.

The Recorder's Office is located at 1010 Franklin Avenue, Suite 110, Brookville, IN 47012. Hours are 8:30am-4pm M-F. They will occasionally do searches for an individual if the request is accompanied by a SASE along with the book and page number of the item to be copied. Payment of $1.00 per copy must be included with the request.
Deeds 1811-present - indexed by grantor and grantee.
Land Entries 1803- - Original tract books are indexed by section, township, and range.
Newspapers 1826- - Original copies of local newspapers

Located at 1010 Franklin Avenue, Suite 210, Brookville, IN 47012. Hours are M-F, 8:30am-4:00pm. The Health Department closes from 12-1pm for lunch.
This office has information concerning births and deaths from 1882 to the present day. Their books are organized by year, with events listed as they occurred. Office personnel can do a search only if the request is narrowed down to a year, and the request must be accompanied by a SASE and payment. The Health Department charges $10.00 for a copy of either a birth certificate or a death certificate.
