NEWTOWN – Miss Leona Belle Wood, 92, died Monday in St. Elizabeth Hospital at Lafayette. Miss Wood, a retired teacher, is survived by a brother, Mirble Wood, of Newtown. She taught in many Indiana communities including Newtown and Mellott. For nearly three years, Miss Wood had been a patient in the Alward Nursing Home at Attica. Born on Aug. 20, 1876, in Camden, Ind. she was the daughter of Rev. Miles and Margaret Wiseman Wood. The family resided in the Newtown community for an extended period. Miss Wood received her education in the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing; however she taught many different subjects in primary and secondary schools, including music. The deceased was affiliated with a West Lafayette United Methodist congregation. She was also a member of the National Retired Teachers Association. In addition to the brother of Newtown, she is survived by another brother, Joe Wood of Portland, Ore. and a sister, Mrs. Lois Earle of Los Angeles, Calif., and nieces and nephews. Services are set for 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the DeSutter Funeral Chapel at Attica with Rev. Harold Bachert officiating. Burial will be in Green Bay Cemetery near Newtown.
