Henry Clay Witchman, 90, Civil War veteran and one of the oldest residents of Fountain County died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Catherine Purple of Cates, Thursday night at 8:30 o’clock. Death followed an illness of only a few days. The aged man was born in Orange County Indiana in 1842 moving to Fountain County with his parents when he was a small child. Mr. Witchman enlisted in the 24th Indiana Regiment in the Civil War and saw service in a number of minor engagements. During one battle he lost a finger. The deceased was married twice, his second wife dying seven years ago. The survivors include 7 children by the second marriage: Mrs. Grace Keller of Covington; Mrs. Agnes Pearson of Kingman; Mrs. Leona Caldwell of Danville, Ill; Mrs. Lacey Pavey of Cates; Mrs. Catherine Purple at whose home he died and Hugh and Albert Witchman both of Kingman; three children by the first marriage: Mrs. Martha Delps of St. Paul, Indiana; Mrs. Carl Purpest of Covington; and Mrs. May Clutter of Detroit, Michigan and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
