Wingate Oct 20 – John Clay Wingate, prominent in republican state politics, died at his home here this evening at 5:30 as a result of a stroke of apoplexy. He had been in declining health for several months. He was born May 22, 1852 in Coal Creek Township, Montgomery County near Pleasant Hill, now known as Wingate. He was united in marriage to Lyla (sic) Gilkey May 22, 1879, who survives. He had no immediate relatives, other than one nephew, J. Claude Hughes and Arthur Hopland (sic) Wingate of Arizona and latter being reared by the deceased. The deceased was state tax commissioner for some time. He was an intimate friend of General Lew Wallace, author of Ben Hurt. He belonged to the Methodist Church,  Masonic Lodge and the Columbia Club of Indianapolis. Funeral services will probably be Thursday at the home with burial at Wingate. - kbz

The funeral of John C. Wingate is to be held Friday morning at 10 o’clock from the Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Methodist Cemetery. Rev. UG Leazenby will officiate and the Masonic ceremony will be used at the grave. The funeral has been postponed until this date in order to allow Arthur E. Wingate a brother to arrive from Arizona. - kbz

Wingate – Nov 1- A large crowd attended the funeral service for John C. Wingate Friday morning.  The church service was in charge of the present and former pastors and the Masonic service was used at the cemetery. The pallbearers were relatives and friends. The honorary pallbearers were Dr George E. Beasley of Lafayette Wesley Gerard of Indianapolis; Wm. McCarty, MF Buxton and Charles McKinney of Newtown and John McCorkle, AE Hogland Wingate of Phoenix Ariz whom Mr. and Mrs. Wingate raised from childhood arrived Thursday as did Mrs. Ida Coon, a relative from New Jersey and have remained for a visit with Mrs. Wingate (died 1930) - kbz
