COVINGTON. Ind. (CNS) – Merrill Otis Whittakern 70, of Covington, died at 10:30 p.m. yesterday (Sept. 22, 1969) at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville. He had been a patient there for six hours and had been ill a year. Born Nov. 17, 1898, in Hedrick, Ill., he was the son of Elmer and Sarah Robinson Whittaker. He was married Feb. 4, 1919, to Enid Waddell, who survives. Mrs. Whittaker had been a resident of Covington for the past 26 years and formerly resided in Palmyra, Ill. He was a retired railroad foreman and member of the First Baptist Church. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Betty Birge of Covington; a son, Gerald of Covington; a brother, Hugh of Carlinville, Ill.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, a brother, two sisters and a grandson. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. James Downey and the Rev. Carl Townsend will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Palmyra. The body is at the Hegg Funeral Home. Friends will be received after noon Wednesday. -– jlr
