COVINGTON - Funeral services for Merrill Otis Whitaker, age 70 of 833 Crocket St., who died at 10:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, were held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church here. The Rev. James Downey and the Rev. Carl Townsend officiated. Burial was in Oak Hlll Cemetery at Palmyra.
Mr. Whitaker died in St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville, Ill., where he had been a patient six hours. He had been in ill health for a year.
He was born Nov. 17, 1898 in Hedrick, Ill., the son of Elmer and Sarah Robinson Whitaker. He was married Feb. 4, 1919 to Enid Waddell, who survives.
Mr. Whitaker had been a resident of Covington for the past 26 years and he had formerly resided at Palmyra, Ill. He was a retired railroad foreman and a member of the First Baptist Church here.
Surviving, in addition to the wife, are: one daughter, Mrs. Betty Birge of Covington; one son, Gerald, also of Covington; one brother, Hugh, of Carlinville, Ill.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, one brother, two sisters and
a grandson.
The Hegg Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
