The Rev. James Watkins, age 56, former resident of the Attica area, died at 10:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville, Ill., where he had been a patient 10 days.
The Rev. Watkins was born in Pittsburgh, Ind., July 6,1910, the son of William and Mary Miller Watkins. He married Mildred Kinn Sept. 14, 1929, in Oregon, Ill., and she survives. He was a minister of the Church of God of the Abrahamic faith, and was minister of the Hedrick Church seven years. Currently, he was minister at Seven Church at Marshall, Ill., and the Faith Chapel at Lafayette, where he preached his last sermon Sept. 4.
He was a general superintendent of the Church of God with headquarters at Oregon, Ill., 10 years. He built several chapels - the Faith Chapel at Lafayette; Garden Park Chapel, Wyoming, Mich., and was starting construction on a chapel at New Lenox, Ill., at the time of his death.
Surviving, in addition to the. wife, ·are: one son Daniel, at home; a stepfather, Luther Guthrie of Bristol, Ind.; four half brothers, Donald Jones of Byron Center, Mich., Ralph Jones of Mendon, Mich., George Jones of Sturgis, Mich., and William Jones of Texas; and one sister, Mrs. Mary Smith of Michigan.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hedrick Church of God. The Rev. Dale Ward of the Kokomo Church of God officiated. Burial, with the DeSutter Funeral Home of Attica in charge, was in the West Lebanon cemetery.
