Matthew Hale Walker was born in Fountain
County, Ind Sept 24, 1848. At the age of 16 he entered the army and remained in
the service until the close of the war.
He then engaged in teaching and studying the law. Was united in marriage
with Miss Ruth A. Matthews April 7 1876; to them has been born three sons, all
living. After his marriage he moved to Fowler and entered upon the practice of
the profession he has chosen; and has been a continuous resident here until his
decease. Brother Walker was baptized and received to membership in the
Presbyterian Church on Feb 11, 1894 aged 47 years 5 months 20 days. Mrs. Walker in her bereavement has the
sympathy of a large circle of friends.
The funeral services were held at the late home. The bar met and passed
appropriate resolutions. Short speeches were made by attorneys Gray, Merrick,
Fraser, Dinwiddie and Judge Wiley. Gray spoke of the sterling business
integrity of his late partner. Mr.
Fraser spoke of his great legal mind, lacking only the health and opportunity
of becoming one of the great lawyers of the state. Judge Wiley of the personal
relations of his peculiar personal character, of his great legal ability and
finally of his failing health and last sad days. The song by the quartette,
Messrs Dinwiddie, Hampton, Pagett and Phares and solo by Mr. Phares added much
to the solemnity of the occasion. The conversational sermon by Rev. Schultz was
touching and tender. Rev. Colvin assisted. The flowers were most beautiful. Mr.
Fraser’s offering represented an open book, the right page was of red roses,
the left of white carnations in which were the letters, in red roses, “The
Verdict.” The offering of the bar represented the Gate Ajar and was composed
chiefly of cala lilies. Messrs. Wadsworth, Long, Gray, Merrick Jos. Brown and
Hall served as pall bearers. The remains were interred in the Fowler cemetery
where brief exercises were held.
