Covington – Sarabel Smith, 83, 729 7th St, Covington died at 11:55 p.m. Oct 16, 1995 at United Samaritans Medical Center, Sager Campus, Danville, Illinois. She was born north of Covington Feb 17 ,1912 the daughter of Roy Elbert and Mary Bilsland Smith. She was never married. She was a lifelong resident of Covington. She graduated from Covington HS in 1929 and Indiana State University. She was a teacher at Covington schools for 45 years, retiring in 1978. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she served as financial secretary for several years and secretary of official board for 30 years, United Methodist Women and past district president; 50-hear member of Troy Chapter #145 OES and served as district deputy and grand representative to Washington DC, charter member of Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Psi Iota Xi, member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Retired teachers; Fountain County Garden Club; Richard Henry Lee Chapter of DAR; Woman’s Club and Troy Rural Demonstration Club. Surviving are six nephew: Jack (Helen) Martin, Dayton, Ohio; James Robert (Janet) Martin, Palm City, Fla; Frank A (Nancy) Smith and Robert Smith, both of Indianapolis; Thomas Wayne (Penny) Smith and Richard P. (Cathy) Smith both of Covington; two nieces Sharon (Joe) Price, Williamsport; Julie (Tad) Arsenault, Ashboro, NC; 17 great nieces and nephews and five great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Dorothy Nave and Mary Kathryn Martin and three brothers, Ernest B, Roy E, Jr and William Russell Smith. Funeral services were held in the First United Church. - kbz
